Let’s Play Ball

Chilly morning couldn’t keep Fairfax Little League players, fans away from opening ceremonies.

Don Knowlan remembers a funny moment from a Fairfax Little League playoff game about 30 years ago. The left fielder jumped over the fence to field a ball, jumped back over and threw the ball to an infielder to tag the runner out. The boy just didn’t know that you couldn’t do that.

"That tells you what was in the county back then," said Knowlan, who got Chilcott Field built in the 1970s. "This park had one of the only fences."

Little League players know the rules now, and hundreds of them packed into the outfield of a ball field there for the 2007 Fairfax Little League opening day.

Chilcott Field is located south of Fairfax Boulevard, just off Oak Street.
