Virginia Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 3-5

Whether its school supplies, clothes, or shoes, every kid going back to school this year needs at least some of those items on their back-to- school list.

Starting Friday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 5, Fair Oaks Mall will be holding the second annual Virginia Sales Tax holiday. All items from clothes, shoes, and school supplies will be exempted from the 5 percent state and local retail sales tax.

"Our stores will be fully stocked and ready to provide a full range of products for back-to-school," said Ferris Kaplan, marketing director at Fair Oaks. "We invite parents and students to enjoy the weekend shopping and take advantage of the added savings."

The sales tax holiday was approved in 2006 by the Virginia General Assembly stating that each year during the first weekend of August there would be no sales tax on certain items. The previous year the event has brought everyone from Maryland, the District and Pennsylvania, just to save money, and this year is expected to bring even more people.

"It's wonderful that this is our second year — that Virginia has had this because it gives our customers incentive to not only come in and shop but save 5 percent that weekend," said Kaplan.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, there will be a free Diet Pepsi Max sampling from 12-5 p.m. in the Grand Court. The event is free and open to the public.

The holiday event begins Friday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 5 during the regular store hours. Fair Oaks Mall is located at 11750 Fair Oaks, Fairfax.
