Join Animal Control on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. for a free class on Dog Bite Awareness at Dog Day Afternoon in Leesburg. Sponsored by FunDogs Continuing Canine Education, the class features representatives from Animal Control as well as the Loudoun County Health Department and focuses on laws regarding dog bites, what to do if your dog bites someone and the importance of rabies vaccinations. The Loudoun Literacy Council is offering two levels of classes in English as a Second Language at the Senior Center at Cascades Marketplace, 21060 Whitfield Place, Sterling. Registration and pretesting will take place Thursday, Sept. 6. Class begin Monday, Sept. 17 and Thursday, Sept. 20, from 10:30 a.m.-noon both days, and run for eight weeks. Students will be assigned to a class based on their English level. Cost: $25 for members, $50 for nonmembers. The 22nd Citizen’s Police Academy will commence Tuesday Sept. 11. The free sessions will be held one evening per week for 11-weeks and each session will be two hours in length, 7-9:30 p.m. All classes will be held at the Sheriff’s Office administration building in Leesburg with the exception of the firearms training session, which will be held at the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office firearm’s range located off of Route 50, in the Chantilly area. Kathi Fertig will instruct a one-day mural painting workshop on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The workshop will concentrate on conceptualizing and designing a mural creation. Participants will learn about stenciling, free-hand painting, tracing images, enlarging, mixing color and creating trompe l’oeil. Cost: $80 and students. The Loudoun County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer a Virginia Gardener Shortcourse. The Shortcourse is a condensed version of the training that Trainees who are new members of the Master Gardener Volunteer program receive. The Shortcourse is held in the Loudoun Cooperative Extension conference room at 30-B Catoctin Circle, SE (Wachovia Bank Building), Leesburg.
