African Art on Display

Assembling the Brubaker Collection was almost as exciting for Maureen Kohl as displaying it.

"You should see their house floor to ceiling, its just full of art, "said Kohl in describing Bill and Gloria Brubaker's home. Kohl, an art professor at Montgomery College, oversees "The Brubaker Collection: African Art From the Continent and New World Diaspora." The collection opened on Feb. 5 and will run through the rest of February, which is Black History Month. The collection is on display until March 10.

The Brubakers have spent their 30 years of marriage traveling the world and collecting art, said Kohl. Much of that art was collected in Africa and in places where African descendants have settled, such as the Caribbean and Latin America, not to mention the United States.

The Brubakers often go where few travelers go in search of their art, said Joyce Jewell of Montgomery College.

"They've gone up-river in boats, the whole nine yards," said Jewell.

The artwork on display ranges from paintings to dolls and sculptures and baskets.
