Christian Rippe of Ashburn is performing with the Valparaiso University (Ind.) symphony orchestra during the academic year. Rippe, a freshman, plays the cello in the ensemble. He is an exploratory engineering major and the son of Mark and Karen Rippe of Ashburn.

Thursday Jan. 25, the Loudoun County Fire-Rescue System will recognize 44 volunteers who recently completed firefighter and emergency medical technician training and 10 Firefighter 1 Monroe vo-tech students. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) has named James L. Banks Jr. of Loudoun County, attorney at Seyfarth Shaw LLP and former member of the Richmond City Council, to the Governor’s Commission on National and Community Service.

Jerome Fowlkes (class of 1988) of South Riding, president and CEO, Fowlkes Development Corp., South Riding, is one of 13 Virginia Tech alumni who will serve on the university's Multicultural Alumni Advisory Board, which engages Virginia Tech graduates in university efforts to strengthen its commitment to a diverse and inclusive community.

Karmen Duran of Leesburg, a sophomore majoring in accounting and information systems in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, was recently selected to be part of the Yates Project at Heritage High School for the 2006-2007 school year.

The Yates Project is a volunteer group mentored in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Virginia Tech by Alvin Bryant, assistant director of undergraduate admissions. The members of this group are working to recruit future Virginia Tech students by going back to their hometowns and meeting with high school students in settings such as local churches and community centers.

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority has elected the officers for its a 12-member policy-making board. NVRPA is made up of the counties of Loudoun, Fairfax and Arlington, and the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax. William C. (Bill) Dickinson of Alexandria was re-elected as the chairman and will begin his third one-year term in that position. The position of vice chair will be filled by James I. Mayer from Arlington County. Mayer had previously served as the treasurer. Joan G. Rokus, board member from Loudoun County, was elected to fill the position of treasurer, a position she had held previously with the organization. Rokus has also served in the past as vice chair and use to serve as a member of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. Jeffrey Tarbert of Falls Church was elected to a seat as the fourth member of the NVRPA executive committee. Tarbert joined the NVRPA board in 2005. He previously served as the mayor of the City of Falls Church.

Army Reserve Pvt. Jason A. Poole has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Poole is the son of Linda Poole of Evergreen Mills Road, Leesburg.

He is a student attending Loudoun County High School, Leesburg.

Jessica L. McMurrer of Leesburg qualified for the Dean's List at Coastal Carolina University for the fall 2006 semester.
