It's not Burke, it's not Lorton, but for the more than 2,000 people who live there, South Run is home.
The Fairfax Station community of 530 homes features wide tree-lined streets, sidewalks and winding roads that make for a sprawling neighborhood, located just off the Fairfax County Parkway and Lee Chapel Road.
"We first came here 11 years ago from Middleton, Wis.," said Jim Conant, vice president of the South Run Regency, the neighborhood's Homeowner's Association. The homes, located on one-third acre lots, allowed for space between neighbors and plenty of yard room for children to play.
"This was the only place we found, outside of the three- or five-acre lot communities, that gave us this much space," Conant said.
The proximity to his job at George Mason University, combined with the reputation of Sangster Elementary and Lake Braddock Secondary schools and the walking-distance location to Burke Lake Park, made South Run an ideal location for his family.
Conant said he and his wife have stayed in South Run for the sense of community, provided by nearly a dozen activities sponsored by the HOA's Social Committee and neighborhood swim team, the South Run Seahawks.
Robyn Trump agreed that the block parties and cookouts help bring neighbors together, promoting community spirit.
"This is a really great place to live," said Trump, who has organized the biannual tour of homes around the holidays to raise money for local charities.
"It's nice that there's a certain amount of people who will always participate in things," she said. She's currently working on compiling recipes for a neighborhood cookbook.
Like Conant, Trump said she was drawn to the neighborhood for the schools but stayed for the friendly setting and access to trails and the nearby pool.
Opportunities for socializing aren't restricted to children in the summer, Trump said.
"There are at least five bunco groups at any given time," Trump said, referring to a popular dice game that is played by groups of 15 to 20 people. "There's also a huge euchre group that had 100 couples in it when it started."
In the summer, the neighborhood hosts swim meets, cookouts and a day-long bluegrass concert, and last year the community had its first chili cook-off and pet costume contest for Halloween, she said.
The Homeowner's Association usually has its annual business meeting at the pool, Conant said, and members of the Board of Directors and their volunteers will serve dinner to the residents during the party.
Homes in South Run are about 20 years old, Conant said, but have been maintained so they don't show their age.
"Plus, we're pretty much built out, so we don't have to worry about any more construction," he said.
