Loudoun County Public Library has received special mention as Library Journal’s Library of the Year. This award is given to library systems that show creativity and innovation in developing specific community programs that increase library usage; and show leadership in creating programs that can be emulated by other libraries. The award given to Loudoun County Public Library acknowledges that "they listened to the people, but the key to their success was in what they did about what they heard." While based on excellent services to the community, and outstanding collection of materials, the award highlight the library’s outreach to teens.

Eric R. Link has been hired as Loudoun County’s legislative liaison effective June 11. Link will replace Memory Porter, who retired from that position last month after 27 years.

Link, 39, has been employed since 2004 by the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA), where he has served as a senior contract officer and advisor to the chief information officer on legislative matters. VITA is a state information technology agency that provides services to more than 90 executive branch agencies and other Virginia government customers.

Kimberly Lyon of Sterling won second place for second grades for the Jamestown 400th Commemorative Postal Cachet Contest with a special awards ceremony and reception at Jamestown Settlement June 23.

The Piedmont Community Foundation named the Loudoun Literacy Council as the first recipient of a Culture and Arts Program Grant from the Community Fund Endowment. The grant of $500 was awarded to support the newly formed Literacy Symposium, which will help local English as a Second Language providers better serve the immigrant population in Loudoun County.

The Northern Virginia EMS Council honored several individuals June 14 including Alyssa Menzenwerth, Sterling Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, award to the Nurse with Outstanding Contributions to EMS; Michael K. Gammill, Sterling Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, award to the Outstanding EMS Pre-Hospital Educator; Byron F. Andrews III, chief, Sterling Park Volunteer Rescue Squad; and Elizabeth M. Rambo, Sterling Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, Outstanding Contribution to EMS by a High-School Senior. Rambo also received a $1,000 college scholarship.

The following student in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, recently received the 2007 Darden Restaurants Foundation Scholarship. Jennifer Biernacki of Ashburn is majoring in hospitality and tourism.

Three individuals and one group received the 2007 Virginia Environmental Stewardship Awards during a presentation by Secretary of Natural Resources L. Preston Bryant Jr. and executive director of the Virginia Petroleum Council Mike Ward. The awards recognize individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding and innovative contributions to protect Virginia’s natural resources. Jennifer Weatherly of Sterling was one of the nominated people. Weatherly is a student at Dominion High School in Sterling. She established an environmental club at the school and organized students for a storm drain marker and awareness program. This effort led to her recruitment of local Girls Scout troops and students to carry out the program. As a result, there are more than 1,000 storm drain markers in the Sterling community. She was nominated by her environmental studies teacher, Mary E. Young-Lutz.
