Rosa Lee Chooses Colors, Mascot

Rosa Lee Carter's future students vote on new mascot and school colors.

Students who will attend Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School this fall, have chosen a new identity for themselves and colors for their new school. When the doors of the new school open in September, the students will be known as the Coyotes and their spirit colors will be navy blue and silver.

In February, students from Legacy Elementary and Dominion Trail Elementary, who will transfer to Rosa Lee Carter for the next school year, voted on what they wanted their school's mascot and colors to be.

"It was overwhelming," Principal Michele Freeman said about the coyote mascot. "I think it was important for the kids to choose because it's their school too."

In addition to the coyote, Freeman placed the mustang and the panda on the mascot ballot.

"I was looking for animals that were either different or unique," she said. Freeman said she particularly liked the coyote because it is a very adaptable animal.

"That is the same kind of characteristic I would like kids from Rosa Lee Carter to leave with," she said.

As for the color schemes she selected, red and black, green and gold and the chosen navy blue and silver, Freeman said she wanted colors that would work for spirit wear.

"I wanted colors that all kids would feel comfortable wearing," she said.

Freeman plans on using the mascot design she currently has, unless someone offers to create a new design.

"This one is pretty cute," she said. "I think it will work well."
