GBW Wins State Chess Championship

There's great things happening with Greenbriar West Elementary's Chess Team. The team won both first place in the K-3 division, and first place in the K-5 division at the Virginia Scholastic Chess Championship March 10-11 in Glen Allen, Va. Greenbriar West tied for first in the K-5 with Bull Run Elementary.

The competition featured 537 players who played six rounds (1.5 to 3 hours per round), in four sections (K-3, K-5, K-8, and K-12) at Deep Woods High School. This is Greenbriar West's third year of competitive chess and only their second year at the state championship. They won second places last year.

GBW's team scored 18.0 points and consists of: Stephannie Chen, Graham Connors, Branden Kim, Stephen Kim, Varun Kripanandan, Joshua Lee, Brian Li, Christine Li, Hans Li, William Li, Aditya Ponukumati, Raghav Ramraj, Rahul Ramraj, Aditya Srikanth, Wendy Sun, and coach Gary Connors.
