Police Valor Awards

The Optimist Club of Herndon will host the Herndon Police Valor Awards on Thursday, Oct. 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at 1090 Sterling Road. For more information call Captain Presgrave at 703-435-6844.

Okra Dance Company To Perform

The Cultural Arts Series, produced by the Town of Herndon Parks and Recreation Department, welcomes the Okra Dance Company on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m., at the Industrial Strength Theatre. The performance will take the audience on a tour of Mexico, Greece, Hawaii, Japan, Italy and the Caribbean through a fast-paced, colorful production by two dancers. Mayor’s Cup

Hispanic Festival

Cox Communications and Council for the Arts of Herndon, as part of the Herndon Arts Week, are co-sponsoring the Town’s Hispanic Festival. Columbus Day Schedule

Town of Herndon announced its Columbus Day Holiday Schedule. The Town offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 8. Refuse normally collected on Monday will be collected on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The Herndon Community Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open from 7 a.m. until dark.

The RTT’s at Worldgate

Herndon Children’s Series, produced by the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department, presents The RTT’s, an award-winning rock and roll band from Washington, D.C. The performance is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Phoenix Worldgate Movie Theatre. The cost is $4 in advance and $5 at the door. For more information call 703-787-7300.

Free Clinic Golf Tournament

Learn the GO System

Individuals who need a solution to get and stay organized to address their busy personal and professional agenda can enroll in a seminar scheduled for Monday, Oct. 8, from 8:45 a.m. to noon, at Fairways Executive Center, 1982 Isaac Newton Square West, Suite 202, Reston.

In the GO (Get Organized) System seminar, offered by Certified Professional Organizer Susan Kousek, participants will learn how to become more efficient and thus less stressed. Participants will take away an implementation kit and book as well.

Fee is $187. There is a $20 discount to members of Dulles Regional or Reston Chambers of Commerce.

Scarecrow Making at Frying Pan Farm

Adults and children are invited to join in a scarecrow-making workshop in the field next to the Frying Pan Farm Visitor Center on Sunday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. and, again, from 2 to 3 p.m.

The farm provides the stuffing materials for a scarecrow and the special touches for the face. Bring an outfit and a pair of pantyhose for each scarecrow. The cost is $7 for the first scarecrow and $5 for each additional one. Pre-paid reservations are required.

Once the workshop is over, visit the Kidwell Farm and the animals, shop the Country Store, or enjoy a wagon ride. Dress for the weather as this event is held outdoors and canceled if it rains.
