Avengers Sitting at .500 With Playoffs Looming

The Alexandria Avengers, a minor league basketball team playing in the National Professional Basketball League, have one more home game before the playoffs start on June 14.

The Avengers are currently 5-4, having logged wins over the Hudson Valley Hawks, the New York Strikeforce and the Maryland Bayriders.

But Alexandria has lost its two of its last three games heading into a scheduled visit from the Hawks. The Avengers will host Hudson Valley, who they beat, 123-120, in overtime at 7:05 p.m. on June 7 at Francis Hammond Middle School.

The Avengers recently added Alexandria native Kelvin Coggins, a 6-foot-4 forward from Coastal Carolina to bolster the offensive firepower. The Avengers have scored 145 points on separate occasions.

Midway through the season, the West Virginia Wild were forced to disband after not showing up to a schedule contest with the Elmira Bulldogs. According to the league’s Web site, the NPBL had no previous knowledge of Wild owner Daniel Hicks’ legal woes and financial instability.

“Professionally it was not handled properly on either side as a decision was made and all parties must live with that decision,” the league said on its Web site. “We at the NPBL would like to apologize to all the sponsors, families and friends for the manner in which this was handled.”

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs, who beat Alexandria by 13 points on April 27, hold the first-place seed, but the Bayriders are a half-game out of first place. The playoffs start on June 14, with the NPBL championship set for June 21.
