Northern Virginia Community College will be closed on Inauguration Day and all classes are cancelled, a change from the published spring semester schedule. The college is substituting holiday annual leave hours granted to it by state government to make the cancellation possible. NOVA will also be closed on Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a previously scheduled holiday.
A special concert will be held at Westfield High School in Chantilly to benefit the Rembrance Projects that have been established for Erin Peterson and Reema Samaha, two of the victims of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. The concert will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, at 4 p.m, and is sponsored by Loudoun Habitat for Humanity and features music performed by musicians of national and internal acclaim. The three featured musicians are: David Erlich, Violinist, Teresa Erlich, Pianist and Ben Wyatt, Cellist. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved in advance at benefit0111@yahoo.com and will also be available at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Erin Peterson Build and the Reema J. Samaha Memorial Scholarship program. These projects are supported by VT-ENGAGE and the Center for Student Engagement and Community Partnerships at Virginia Tech.

The 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Festival will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11 from 4-6 p.m. in the Centreville High School auditorium. The program is free, open to the public and sponsored by the Chantilly Pyramid Minority Student Achievement Committee (CPMSAC). The Festival is a blend of entertainment and education to display the students’ array of talents. Performances may include choirs, bands, orchestra, vocal and instrumental soloists, dancers (group or solo), and orators. The 2009 MLK Committee is made up of Kim Graham, Brenda Johnson, Wanda Tanks-Gregory and Deneen Vaughn.

Samantha Luffy of Centreville was selected to play a performer for University of Mary Washington production of "Elegies: A Song Cycle." Luffy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Luffy of Centreville and is a 2007 graduate of Westfield High School. Performances were held Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in Klein Theatre.
Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed a training program at NOVA’s Manassas Campus. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special, five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.
Sigma Alpha Lambda announces that Caitlin Marie Meslar of Centreville is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the Montclair State University. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.
Meslar is a sophomore and a guard on the MSU women’s basketball team and recently selected to represent the University at the NCAA Leadership Conference in Pittsburgh.
Meslar graduated from Westfield High School and her parents Karen and Walter Meslar reside in Centreville.

Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program.
