Focus on Bullying and Sexual Harassment

The McLean Branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at the McLean Community Center. The program will focus on bullying and sexual harassment in middle school and high school. Leslie Vandivere, last year's co-chair of the Fairfax County Public Schools Human Relations Advisory Committee, will speak of Fairfax County’s efforts regarding bullying in the public schools. Holly Kearl, an AAUW program manager in the Legal Advocacy Fund department, will review the results of her research and writing on sexual harassment. She co-authored the AAUW report, "Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School." She also authored a book on street harassment and founded the website www.StopStreetHarassment.org. All are welcome. Monthly Charity Event in McLean

Huckaby Briscoe Conroy Realty Group announced the launch of a community fundraising event that will be held monthly in McLean. Karen Briscoe and Lizzy Conroy with the HBC Realty Group stated that the purpose of the Community Charity Champions is to support local charities in fundraising.

The inaugural event will be Monday, April 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pulcinella Italian Host in McLean at 6852 Old Dominion Drive. The April 23 event is in support of Lift Me Up! in Great Falls. Come enjoy dinner and know that approximately 60 percent of everything spent on food and drink will go to the charity as long as the diner brings the flyer about the event. Lift Me Up! is a therapeutic horseback riding program in Great Falls that is dedicated to providing safe and effective instruction to children and adults with a variety of disabilities. The money will enable the organization to continue helping those with disabilities.

10th District Academy Day Set for April 14

Area students interested in attending one of the nation’s service academies are encouraged to attend the 10th District Academy Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Loudoun County School Board Office in Ashburn.

Representatives from the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the DoD Medical Examination Review Board will be in attendance. In addition, representatives from Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets have been invited.

Students and parents will have the opportunity to meet with these representatives, as well as participate in panel discussions.

The 2017 Academy nomination season is now "open" for inquiries from students considering attending one of the U.S. service academies. Call for Nominations

The McLean Citizens Association (MCA) and the McLean Community Foundation (MCF) are now soliciting nominations from residents of McLean for the governing Boards of both organizations. The MCA Board of Directors consists of forty members, serving for one-year terms. The MCF Board of Trustees consists of nine individuals serving staggered three-year

terms, three of which will be elected this year. Election of members of both boards will be conducted at the MCA Annual Meeting in May 2012 at the McLean Community Center.
