Making a Difference

Throughout our nation’s history, individual Americans have voluntarily joined together to meet important needs in their communities. From the early days of barn raisings to helping others in the aftermath of hurricanes like Sandy, this generosity and willingness to work together toward a common goal is the hallmark of the American character.

One of the ways Americans have done this for the last hundred years has been through community foundations. ACT for Alexandria (ACT) joins community foundations across the country in celebrating National Community Foundations Week Nov. 12-18 to recognize our role in promoting charitable giving and engagement to build a stronger Alexandria.

Since our founding in 2004, ACT has played a vital role in bringing individuals, businesses, organizations and city officials together to address the critical needs of our community. Working in tandem with these entities has truly made a difference for those in need and our community at large. The caring and concern Alexandrians demonstrate for one another is unmatched and particularly important in light of the economic reality of the past few years. We are truly lucky to be living in one of the most generous communities in America.

During National Community Foundations Week, and as we enter this season of thanksgiving, let us all give thanks not only for ACT and other community foundations, but for the hundreds of individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations that are working together to make Alexandria a better place to live by sharing their gifts of time, resources and talent every day. ACT for Alexandria is pleased to play an important role in this effort and in our community. We invite you to consider the many ways in which you can give back to make a real difference in the lives of others.
