Volunteers Needed for Relay For Life in Vienna

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® is seeking volunteers in Vienna—walkers, cancer survivors, caregivers, community leaders, anyone wanting to make a difference—to organize and recruit fundraising teams, garner community support, coordinate logistics, seek refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend a hand to ensure the success of the 2013 event.

The first volunteer meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m. at Whole Foods Vienna, 143 Maple Avenue East, Vienna.

The meeting will kick off the planning process for the Vienna’s Relay For Life event, which supports the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back against the disease.

If you would like to join the Relay For Life in Vienna as a volunteer or team participant, call the American Cancer Society at 703-937-1919 or visit www.RelayForLife.org/ViennaVA.

Experience Northside Park at Night

Experience the outdoors at night and get to know the nighttime wildlife at Northside Park (entrance by the W&OD Trail) on Sunday, Feb. 17, beginning at 4:45 p.m.

Led by Fairfax Master Naturalist Wendy Cardany, “Owl Walk” will provide participants with the opportunity to experience the park at night and use their ears instead of their eyes to identify our wild neighbors. The tour will include a presentation on the animals you might hear or see in the park. The presentation will begin at 4:45 p.m. with the children’s portion beginning at 5 p.m., followed by a 20 minute walk through the park.

Participants should meet at the Northside Park entrance off of the W&OD Trail. The tour will follow a rocky and uneven path along the perimeter of the park. In addition, participants will be asked to be silent during parts of the hike in order to hear wildlife. Participants should bring a flashlight and wear good walking shoes.

Owl Walk is free and no registration is required. You do not have to be a resident of Vienna to participate; appropriate for all ages. For more information, contact Cathy Salgado at 703-255-6356 or e-mail csalgado@viennava.gov.

Town Hall Renovations Underway

Renovations at Town Hall began on Monday, Jan. 14, and will include upgrading the building’s HVAC system, installing new windows, carpet, lighting and ceilings, and upgrading the building’s security system. Renovations are expected to last through the end of October 2013.

The bulk of the renovations will upgrade the building’s 40-year-old HVAC system and include multiple energy saving components including low energy lighting, triple pane windows and integral blinds.

During this time, Town Hall will continue to observe normal operating hours and service delivery will not be impacted. Customers should note that beginning Feb. 1, all financial services including water and sewer bills and customer service, dog licenses, vehicle licenses, business licenses, meals taxes, parking tickets and all other cashier services will be located in a temporary facility behind Town Hall throughout the duration of the renovation. The current Finance space located in Town Hall will serve as swing space and house services that are being impacted due to work occurring in other parts of the building.

The first phase, which began on Monday, includes renovations of the Town Council Chambers and the offices located on the second floor. Work on the chambers is slated for completion at the end of February with work on the remainder of the floor lasting through May. The second phase includes renovations on the first floor and will occur between May and August while the third phase will occur on the lower level and will last from August through October. During each phase, impacted departments will occupy the current Finance space on the first floor until work is completed in their respective locations.

While the chambers is undergoing renovations, Town Council meetings and court will be held as scheduled in the chambers. All other board and commission meetings will be moved to off-site locations for the remainder of January and the entire month of February. All meetings will remain open to the public and will be held at their regularly scheduled time. Check the town’s website for location information.

Town Hall, 127 Center Street S, is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For specific questions related to the renovation, contact the Department of Public Works at 703-255-6380 or jsergent@viennava.gov.

Standing Meetings Relocated

Due to renovations occurring in the Town Council’s Chambers in Town Hall, 127 Center Street S, all boards and commission meetings scheduled from Jan. 17 through Feb. 28, 2013, have been moved to alternate locations. The Town Council meetings for Jan. 14, 28, Feb. 4, 11 and 25, will be held in the Town Council Chambers as scheduled. Court will be held as scheduled in the Town Council Chambers throughout the renovations.

The Vienna Town Code is now available in a more accessible and searchable format online through the town’s website at www.viennava.gov/index.aspx?nid=140.

As part of the recodification process, the town engaged the Municipal Code Corporation to assist the town clerk with reformatting, updating and editing the town code. The final product resulted in a cleaner, more organized and streamlined Town Code that is easier to search online.

A hard copy of the Town Code will continue to be available in the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall, 127 Center Street S, for public inspection.

For more information, contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 703- 255-6304 or clerk@viennava.gov.
