In June and July, Alice Nelson of Arlington participated in a study-abroad program examining the role of media in a post-conflict society, and assisted in producing two short documentary films: "Future Tense," which offers a youth perspective on the deep divisions that persist among the region's Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks, and what can be done to move forward, and "A Mother's Walk," which follows the Mothers of Srebrenica on one of their yearly visits to the hillsides where relatives were massacred by Serbian troops under the command of Gen. Ratko Mladic. Nelson is majoring in media arts and design.
Liam O'Neill, a sophomore majoring in building construction in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, who is a percussion musician, was selected to be a member of the Marching Virginians at Virginia Tech.
Arlington Career Center juniors Jeremy Cannon and Evan Horowitz placed second in the first annual student video contest sponsored by the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA). The winners were announced at the Opening General Session of the VSBA Annual Convention on Nov. 14. Students were asked to create a 30-second video around the theme, “there is no app for that.” Videos were judged on how well they addressed the topic, the quality of the production of the video, as well as the depth of thought and creativity of the video. Both Cannon and Horowitz are in Tom O’Day’s TV/Multimedia Production II class at the Career Center.

The Salisbury University Alumni Association welcomed Darren J. Jackson to its board of directors. Jackson earned a B.S. in business administration in 2004. He is the mid-Atlantic sales manager for the Bank of America, specializing in medical practice sales and acquisitions. He also has been a sales representative for healthcare industry leaders, including Quest Diagnostics, and Merck and Pfizer pharmaceuticals. At SU, Jackson was a resident assistant, president of the University’s NAACP Chapter and chair of the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Student Advisory Council.

Each student will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship, worth more than $140,000 each, to a Posse Foundation partnering institution. Rusin, who plans to attend Pepperdine University, and Hewitt, who plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, were selected out of 1,500 nominees nationwide.

Ariana Decastro a student at Wakefield High School has been nominated to represent Virginia as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2013 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. Decastro has been awarded the opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of journalism and media. Decastro was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.
The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) and Sodexo presented Claremont Elementary School with the Healthy Schools Award for participating in the Healthy Kids Fun Run at a school wide assembly. In addition, the Claremont P.E. department received $1,000 and each student received a healthy snack pack from Sodexo.

Washington-Lee High School freshman Marisa Shotwell was one of two Virginia students inducted into the American Junior Academy of Science at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Feb. 13-17 in Boston. Shotwell was invited to present the research for her project, “The Effect of Different Antibiotics on Staphylococcus Epidermidis in a Simulated Surgical Suture.” Shotwell’s project compared the ability of penicillin, vancomycin and moxifloxicin to inhibit growth of a Staph virus in a simulated surgical suture. Her research was conducted at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Shotwell intends to pursue a career in medicine.

Young scientists from the area had a chance to showcase their projects during the Northern Virginia Regional Science and Engineer Fair. This year’s winners, which include students from Arlington Public Schools middle and high schools, were announced on March 3.
