Dressing is a senior majoring in architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. Arthur H. Genuario is a senior majoring in building construction in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. Alexander C. Gheesling is a junior majoring in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Philip A. Helm is a junior majoring in general engineering in the College of Engineering. Casey P. Jenkins is a junior majoring in communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. Dylan M. Keightley is a freshman majoring in university studies. Saskia R. Kathryn Dianne Lucas was named to the president's list at the University of South Carolina for the fall 2012 semester. Kathryn is a junior majoring in biology/pre-med.

Alexandra Lee Butler, a senior at Clemson University, is spending the Spring semester studying in Bilbao, Spain. Butler is a management major at Clemson.

Paul Fiesel, a senior history major has been named to the University of Dallas dean's list for the fall 2012 semester.

More than 300 JMU students embarked on 30 spring break trips around the country and world. The students spent the week living simply, focused on service in their destination community but also on teamwork and reflection within their group. The following students participated in alternative spring break: Julia Fiorio, Lillian Addy, Bryan Jacobs and Wyatt Floyd

Anastasia C. Voellm, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick R. Voellm of Alexandria, has been named to Randolph-Macon Academy's dean's list for the second quarter of the 2012-13 school year. Anastasia is a senior.

Connor James Mack Lenio was named to the dean's list for the fall 2012 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Lenio is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.

Students from Mount Vernon schools will represent the school district at the state level of the National History Day competition in Hampton on April 20. These students placed first or second in their category at the District 5 National History Day competition, held recently at Mount Vernon High School.

Ashley Barrow, Mount Vernon High School, second place, Senior Individual Exhibit, “Arthur Ashe.”

Roncs Etame-Ese, Victoria Brightwell, and Diego Castro, Mount Vernon High School, second place, Senior Group Website, “The Assassination of JFK: Enhancement of Presidential Security.”

Honorable Mentions were awarded to the following FCPS students:

Giomar Burgos-Rosario, Whitman Middle School, Junior Individual Documentary, “Jackie Robinson: First African-American Baseball Player.”

Two hundred and fifty students from eight Virginia school districts and five private schools, including 95 students from Fairfax County Public Schools, competed in the District 5 competition to present their research based on the 2013 theme, Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events. There were more than 160 entries in the categories of documentary, exhibit, performance, website, and historical paper.

Many FCPS teachers supported National History Day programs in their classes. The teachers who supported the FCPS students listed above include: Vonda Peterson of Lake Braddock Secondary School; Laurie Hartt of Lorton Station Elementary School; Mike Hardy of Madison High School; Eric Heffelmire of McLean High School; Katie Rippy of Mount Vernon High School; Cathy Boivin, Craig Brown, Leigh Shipman, and Ron Maggiano of West Springfield High School; and Melissa Chesney and Erin Sogolow of Whitman Middle School.

The Mount Vernon High School Chamber Orchestra, comprised of the most advanced string instrument players at MVHS, performed at the District Ten Orchestra Assessment on Friday, March 8. Orchestras are scored on a scale of one to five: one being superior, two is excellent, three is good, two is fair, and five is poor. The music played is also classified for difficulty on a scale of one to six: one being very easy and six being professional level repertoire. The MVHS Chamber Orchestra received an overall rating of one (superior) for their program of grade five music from all three assessment adjudicators. This is the first time in recent history that an MVHS orchestra has garnered a score of superior at this difficulty level.
