Looking for a Practice Space

Since 1993, Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s Dominion Puppy Raising Region has raised 470 puppies to become guide dogs for blind and visually impaired men and women around the world. For years the volunteer raisers from across Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, and McLean have gathered on Sunday afternoons at a local church for their weekly puppy raising class. As of Feb. 15, however, the group will be without a home.

The Dominion region volunteers, currently made up of 18 raiser/pup teams, are each given an 8-week-old Guiding Eyes pup to love, nurture, and educate for 12 to 16 months before they return a well-socialized young adult dog for formal guide dog training. Weekly puppy raising classes are run by Guiding Eyes’ Regional Manager to support raisers and their pups.

The raisers are in need of a large room without carpeting, preferably close to an outside exit and on the main floor. The location should be equipped with chairs, tables, bathrooms, outdoor waste receptacles and some parking. During class, pups and handlers work together mostly with a leash, but some off-leash work and pup play is also incorporated. An available staircase for pups and handlers to use would be beneficial, but isn’t a necessity.

Those interested in donating space are encouraged to contact Carrie Barnett at 410-960-7427 or via e-mail at cbarnett@guidingeyes.org. For more information on the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Puppy Raising Program, visit http://www.guidingeyes.org/volunteer/puppy-raising/. Meet the Dominion raisers online at http://www.gebdominion.org/.

Ongoing

Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) and Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardeners are hosting weekly vegetable gardening talks throughout the summer at Central Library in Arlington. These informal talks are held outdoors at the demonstration garden on the east side of Arlington Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St. The talks are held on most Wednesdays, 7-8 p.m. through mid-October. Additional information about the Central Library garden, including descriptions about each talk, can be found online at: http://library.arlingtonva.us/ai1ec_event/wednesday-expert-gardening-talk-central/ No registration is required. Outdoor talks will be cancelled in event of heavy rain at class time.

The Arlington Food Assistance Center is asking local gardeners to grow seedlings to help Arlington families in need. AFAC’s Plot Against Hunger program collects fresh produce for AFAC clients, and will provide free seeds to gardeners who are willing to donate all or a portion of the seedlings and vegetables they grow. Some of the donated seedlings will be distributed to AFAC clients who can grow food for themselves, and the rest will be planted in Plot Against Hunger gardens around the county, producing food for AFAC clients. All donated vegetables go directly to AFAC clients. To obtain free seeds for an individual or community “Plot Against Hunger” garden, or to help in other ways, call Puwen Lee at 703-845-8486, or send an email to plotagainsthunger@afac.org.

On April 6, the U.S. Navy will commission the USS Arlington, one of three ships named in recognition of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The ship honors the memories of those killed or injured in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon that day, and recognizes the heroism of Arlington's public safety personnel — the men and women who raced to the assistance of the victims of the attack.

The ship's on-board Tribute Room, which features steel girders from the Pentagon, will tell Arlington's story as it sails around the world for the next 50 years. Arlington residents will be able to tour the ship whenever it is in its homeport in Norfolk, Va.

The community is encouraged to support the ship's Tribute Room by purchasing items from its online store (ussarlington.com), including T-shirts, lapel pins, a commissioning coin and door decals. All proceeds go to the USS Arlington Fund. For more information, contact Kevin Reardon at 703-228-4091 or kreardon@arlingtonva.us.
