Man Dies in Reston Area Crash

Fairfax County Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on Sunrise Valley Drive near Commerce Park Drive.

An 82-year-old woman was driving a 2000 Subaru Legacy when she struck the rear of a Fairfax Connector bus while she attempted to change lanes at around 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

The driver and her 82-year-old passenger were both transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The passenger, Webster Griffith of Fieldstone Lane in Reston, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. No charges have been placed. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are continuing the investigation.

Body Discovered in South Lakes Area

Around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 officers responded for an elderly man whose property was located in the 11100 block of South Lakes Drive. The owner of the property could not be located. While searching, the patrol officers, assisted by the police helicopter, located a body in Lake Thoreau next to the shopping center. The police dive team responded and recovered the body from the water. The body has been identified as Roy Cooley, 91, of Reston.

The investigation is ongoing but does not appear criminal in nature.
