Boomers Find Answer to Fitness at Senior Centers

Business is booming at Arlington’s six senior centers as more and more 55+ residents register with the Office of Senior Adult Programs and find a wide array of fitness programs available. Several community centers also offer strength training and weight rooms for 55+ only and sports such as pickleball, volleyball and women’s basketball. Ice skating, table tennis, tennis, golf, cycling and line dancing are also offered.

Office of Senior Adult Programs fitness coordinator Jennifer Collins reports there are more than 20 different exercise classes available including yoga, tai chi, pilates, cardio boxing, seated exercises, meditation, zumba, belly dance, aquatics, walking clubs aerobics, Kukuwa and dance fusion.

In addition to the physical fitness classes there are also wellness lectures and programs about nutrition, stress, healthy cooking and other healthy aging activities. All of these programs can be easily accessed with a 55+ Pass obtained by registering with OSAP. There is an annual fee of $20. Registrants receive a 36 page bi-monthly 55+ Guide with all activities listed plus a schedule of 15 to 20 trips offered each month by OSAP’s 55+ Travel office.
