Driver Charged in Fatal Mount Vernon Pedestrian Crash

Crash Reconstruction detectives have placed charges in the Dec. 2 fatal crash that occurred in the area of Richmond Highway and Frye Road. The lead detective obtained a magistrate summons charging the driver from Alexandria with failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Officers had responded to the area of Richmond Highway and Frye Road around 5:44 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1 for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian. Investigation determined a 52-year-old man driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz ES500 was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway. The driver made a turn onto westbound Frye Road.

The pedestrian, David D. Baines, 57, of Alexandria, was crossing Frye Road near the crosswalk and was struck by the car. Baines was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver remained on scene and Crash Reconstruction detectives assumed the investigation. On Friday, Dec. 2 just before 1 a.m., Baines succumbed to his injuries. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors to the crash.
