Vienna Police Highlights August 3 – August 9, 2018

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from Aug. 3 – Aug. 9, 2018.

INCIDENTS

Grand Larceny -- 600 Block of Roberts Drive, NW Between July 22, 12 p.m. and Aug. 5, 12:30 p.m. A resident reported that someone entered an unsecured shed and stole lawn mowing equipment.

Grand Larceny -- 600 Block of Roberts Drive, NW Between July 27, 4 p.m. and Aug. 5, 12:30 p.m. A resident reported that someone entered an unsecured shed and stole a chainsaw.

Grand Larceny -- 300 Block of Windover Ave, NW Between Aug. 1, 12 p.m. and Aug. 5, 12 p.m. A resident reported that someone entered an unsecured garage and stole a bicycle.

Suspicious Event -- 900 Block of Plum Street, SW Aug. 3 sometime between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. A resident reported that an unknown company did some renovations to the exterior of his house without his knowledge or consent.

Animal Case -- Westwood Country Club 800 Maple Avenue East Aug. 3, 12:15 p.m. ACO Barker responded to a report of a dog running at large. The dog was collected and transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Shoplifting -- Giant 359 Maple Avenue East Aug. 3, 1:12 p.m. An unknown man left without paying for the groceries in his shopping cart. The man left the scene prior to police arrival.

Grand Larceny -- Whole Foods 143 Maple Avenue East Between Aug. 3 at 4:15 p.m. and Aug. 4 at 4:30 p.m. A citizen left his bicycle outside the store for 10 minutes. When he exited the store, he discovered someone had taken his unsecured bicycle.

Suspicious Person -- Giant 359 Maple Avenue East Aug. 3, 4:49 p.m. A citizen reported a woman panhandling in the area. Officers made contact with the woman. The woman agreed to stop panhandling and leave the area.

Suspicious Person -- Meadow Lane Park 500 Block of Meadow Lane, SW Aug. 3, 5 p.m. A citizen reported that a man was filming her children while they were playing.

Suspicious Event -- 300 Block of Church Street, NE Aug. 3, 5:16 p.m. A resident reported that while he was on vacation someone entered his property and took pictures of his house.

Animal Case -- 1400 Block of Cottage Street, SW Aug. 4, 10:32 a.m. Officers responded to a report of a cat found inside the backyard of a residence. The cat was collected and transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Civil -- Domino’s Pizza 331 Maple Avenue East Aug. 4 sometime between 12:15 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. An employee reported an incident involving a customer. After investigating the allegations, it was determined that the event was a civil dispute, not a police matter.

Arrest – Drunk in Public -- 400 Block of Cynthia Lane, NE Aug. 4 sometime between 11:18 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. MPO Shaw responded to reports of a man lying on the sidewalk. MPO Shaw arrived on scene and woke up the man. While speaking with the man, MPO Shaw determined that the man was highly intoxicated and unable to care for himself. MPO Shaw arrested the 24-year-old man from Tractor Lane in Fairfax, and transported him to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. The man was charged with Drunk in Public and remanded into the custody of the Fairfax County Deputies.

Arrest – Assault on LEO, Drunk in public and Obstruction of Justice -- McDonald’s 544 Maple Avenue West Aug. 5, 6:49 p.m. While on routine patrol MPO Smith observed a male drinking a beer and walking in traffic. During his interaction with the man, MPO Smith was able to determine that he was heavily intoxicated. The subject became aggressive towards MPO Smith. Other units were called to assist MPO Smith. While being handcuffed the man assaulted MPO Smith. Paramedics were called to the scene to check on the man’s wellbeing. The man was abusive towards the paramedics. MPO Smith arrested the 33-year-old man from Oak Creek Place in Oakton. The man was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Assault on LEO, Drunk in Public and Obstruction of Justice. The man was remanded into the custody of the Fairfax County Deputies.

Petit Larceny -- Vienna Presbyterian Church 124 Park Street, NE Aug. 6 sometime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. An employee reported that some money was missing from her wallet.

Open Door -- 400 Block of Orleans Circle, SW Aug. 6, 6:09 p.m. Officers responded to an alarm coming from the residence. Officers located an unlocked door. Officers searched the residence and didn’t find anything obviously disturbed.

Parking Complaint -- 100 Block of Moore Avenue, SE Between Aug. 7, 6 p.m. and Aug. 9, 8:25 p.m. Officers responded to a traffic complaint in the area. A vehicle with an expired registration was located. A two-day tow tag and a ticket were placed on the vehicle.

Juvenile -- 200 Block of Cedar Lane, SE Aug. 7, 6:07 p.m. A parent requested assistance with a juvenile who was acting out.

Suspicious Event -- Ayr Hill Avenue, NE / Dominion Road, NE Aug. 8 sometime between 8 a.m. and 1:13 p.m. A citizen returned to his parked vehicle and noticed that a window was broken out.

Suspicious Event -- Vienna Community Center 120 Cherry Street, SE Aug. 8 sometime between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. A man came into the community center to use the restroom. When he came out of the restroom he raised his voice and made some threats to a staff member. The man left the area prior to police arrival.

Arrest - Drunk In Public -- Branch Road, SE / Locust Street, SE Aug. 9, 11:23 a.m. A citizen reported a man urinating in public. MPO Shaver responded to the area and located the man. During MPO Shaver’s interview he was able to determined that the subject was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. MPO Shaver arrested the 43-year-old man from Chain Bridge Road in Vienna. MPO Shaver transported the man to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. A warrant for Drunk in Public was issued and served. The man was remanded into the custody of the Fairfax County Deputies.

Domestic Dispute -- 200 Block of Cherry Street, SW Aug. 9, 11:15 p.m. A resident requested police assistance with a domestic dispute. After speaking with the resident officers were able to determine that no crime had taken place.

CRASHES

Hit and Run -- 300 Block of Maple Avenue West July 26, 5:07 p.m. Vehicle# 1 was legally parked inside a parking lot. Vehicle# 2 backed into her vehicle and fled the scene.

Hit and Run -- 311 Cabin Road, SE July 31, 7:32 a.m. Vehicle# 2 was parked legally on the street in front of its residence. Vehicle# 1 was traveling Eastbound on Cabin Road SE and struck Vehicle# 2 driver side mirror. Vehicle# 1 fled scene. Vehicle# 2 was parked unoccupied.

Accident -- Nutley Street, SW / Kingsley Road, SW Aug. 3, 6:29 p.m. Vehicle# 2 was traveling southbound on Nutley Street, SW in the left travel lane. Vehicle# 1 was making a left turn from Kingsley Rd at the 3-way intersection with Nutley Street. Vehicle# 1 struck the rear end area of Vehicle# 2. Vehicle# 2 had the right of way. Driver# 1 was charged with fail to yield right of way.

Hit and Run -- 121 Oak Street, SE Aug. 8, 9:17 a.m. Vehicle# 1 was legally parked on the street in front of 121 Oak St SW when it was struck by Vehicle #2 which fled the scene.

Accident -- Maple Avenue, West / Courthouse Road, SW Aug. 8, 2:46 p.m. Vehicle# 2 was stopped for the red traffic signal at Courthouse Rd, SW and Maple Avenue West, in the right lane. Vehicle# 1 was exiting the shopping center parking lot, attempted to make a right turn to get into the left turn lane at Courthouse Rd, SW and Maple Avenue, West. In doing so the driver of Vehicle# 1 cut the turn too short and struck the left rear bumper of Vehicle# 2. Damage to both vehicles was minimal.

Accident -- Nutley Street, SW / Kingsley Street, SW Aug. 9, 4:05 p.m. Vehicle# 2 was traveling northbound on Nutley Street SW, approaching Kingsley Road, SW. Vehicle# 1 was traveling westbound on Kingsley Road SW, and was stopped at the stop sign with Nutley Street, SW. Vehicle# 1 attempted to make a left turn onto Nutley Street SW, failed to yield, and was struck by Vehicle# 2.
