Vienna Police Highlights July 6 – 12, 2018

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from July 6 – 12, 2018.

INCIDENTS

Fraud -- PNC Bank 353 Maple Avenue, East July 21, 2017, 12 p.m. A citizen advised she received a bad check as a result of a business contract.

Fraud -- 200 Block Harmony Drive, SW June 28 between 12 and 8:43 p.m. A resident was contacted by an unknown person through the internet. The person offered to send the resident a check if she purchased some Google Play gift cards. The resident purchased the cards and provided the gift card numbers to the person before she realized it was a scam.

Police Service -- Niblick Drive and Echols Street, SE Between July 3 at 12 p.m. and July 10 at 7 a.m. A citizen reported that she drove through pink paint that had been spilled on the roadway, believing the paint was dry. Later she found pink paint splattered around the wheels of her vehicle.

Fraud -- 200 Battle Street, SW Between July 3 at 12 p.m. and July 10 at 12 p.m. A resident was attempting to find employment online through ZipRecruiter. Through their site, the resident was set up with a person claiming to be a representative of a pharmaceutical company. The representative sent the resident a cashier’s check but advised her she would need to send the company money for startup costs. The resident contacted her bank who advised the cashier’s check was fraudulent.

Police Service -- 400 Block Druid Hill Road, NE July 3, 8:06 p.m. A large tree branch fell, blocking the roadway and causing a power outage. The branch also fell onto an unoccupied vehicle that was parked on the road.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE July 5, 11:30 a.m. An employee advised that they recently had to euthanize a cat. After the cat was euthanized, the owner notified the health department stating that, before he took the cat to the animal hospital, the cat had bitten him. The cat was transported to the Fairfax County Health Department for testing.

Destruction of Property -- Exxon 395 Maple Avenue, East July 6, 3:20 a.m. Officers responded to an alarm at the Exxon Gas Station. When they arrived they found the glass on the front door was partially shattered. Damage was also found to one of the coolers inside the business. It appears the damage may have been caused by some type of projectile. It does not appear that anyone made entry into the business.

Burglary -- Verizon 301 Maple Avenue, West, Suite F July 6, 3:23 a.m. Officers responded to the report of an alarm at the business. When they arrived, they found someone had forced entry into the business and stole several cell phones.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- Vienna Dog Park 700 Courthouse Road, SW July 6, 8:03 p.m. Two dogs got into a fight at the dog park. Both dogs’ owners received minor injuries when they attempted to break up the fight. The dogs were each placed on a 10-day quarantine, and ACO Barker will follow up with the owners.

Arrest – Drunk in Public -- Westbriar Drive and Maple Avenue, NE July 7, 3:55 p.m. Officers responded to the report of an unconscious man lying in the roadway. When the officers arrived, they found the man conscious and alert. The man refused rescue and was found to be intoxicated. Ofc. Rohr arrested the 32-year-old man from Gosnell Road in Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk in Public.

Computer Trespass -- 1000 Block Moorefield Creek Road, SW July 7, 9 a.m. A resident reported their computer was hacked. The person then sent messages and pornographic emails to some of her contacts. The resident believes she knows who is responsible for the incident.

Domestic Dispute -- Oak Street, SW July 7, 9:34 p.m. A resident reported a verbal dispute he had with his adult son.

Arrest – Drunk in Public -- 300 Block Center Street, South July 8, 12:32 a.m. A woman advised she was being followed by a man. While MPO Shaw was speaking to the woman, the man came near them. Ofc. Rohr observed the man showed signs of intoxication and placed him under arrest. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk in Public.

Suspicious Event -- Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South July 8, 3:45 a.m. A woman called the police to advise she was being followed by another motorist. MPO Smith located the other motorist and conducted a traffic stop. The incident was found to be a misunderstanding, and no violation had occurred.

Suspicious Event -- Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West July 8, 5:31 a.m. Officers responded to the report of a fight in progress and possible gunshots at the hotel. When the officers arrived, several people were seen leaving a room where a party was being held. MPO Smith conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle he observed leaving the hotel. The driver and occupants were all identified and advised the officer that an altercation had occurred during the party. No violations were noted, and all individuals involved left the area.

Found Property -- 400 Block Echols Street, SE July 8, 8:18 a.m. A resident reported a bicycle had been left in front of his residence on July 7 and that no one had returned to claim it. The bicycle was brought to the Vienna Police station where it will be released if an owner can be identified.

Missing Person -- 700 Block Upham Place, NW July 9, 7:54 p.m. A resident reported her adult son was missing. The son suffers from disabilities and had walked away from his home. Officers located the man and returned him to his home.

Police Service -- 300 Block Holmes Drive, NW July 9, 10:45 p.m. A resident reported concern for his friend who was upset. Officers spoke to both the resident and his friend and agreed the resident would take the woman to an area hospital for evaluation.

Bomb Threat -- Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW July 10, 11:18 a.m. A juvenile who is to be attending the summer school program at Cedar Lane was upset about going to the school. While talking to the principal, he began making several threats to harm both the students and staff. He also made the threat to bring explosive devices to the school. The juvenile left the school before the officers arrived. This case is being further investigated.

Hit & Run -- 400 Block Maple Avenue, East July 10, 1:56 p.m. Sgt. Kiley observed a vehicle with an expired inspection traveling westbound on Maple Avenue and attempted to make a traffic stop. Before the officer could conduct the stop, he observed the vehicle strike another vehicle, then attempted to flee the scene of the accident. The vehicle was soon located by officers abandoned in a shopping center parking lot in the 300 block of Maple Avenue, East. This case is being further investigated.

Noise Violation -- 540 Maple Avenue, West July 11, 1:18 a.m. A resident reported noise coming from the construction site. Officers found the construction crew had a waiver from the Town to conduct the work overnight.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- 800 Block Marjorie Lane, SE July 11, 6:30 a.m. A dog owner was walking his two dogs when the animals began to fight. The owner was bitten on the hand by one of the dogs as he tried to break them up. ACO Barker explained the 10-day quarantine to the owner.

Grand Larceny -- Panera 136 Maple Avenue, West July 11, 11 a.m. A citizen reported her credit cards were stolen from her purse while she was in the restaurant. The cards were then used for unauthorized purchases at Tysons Corner Mall.

Assist EMS -- Patrick Street, SE July 11, 7:16 a.m. Officers responded to assist rescue with a possible overdose. A resident advised she and her husband had a verbal dispute and she took some of his prescription medication to help alleviate her pain. The resident was transported to an area hospital by rescue personnel for further evaluation.

Suspicious Event -- 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE July 11, 8:31 p.m. A resident reported a man acting suspiciously, loitering around her building and making unusual statements to her and her neighbors. Officers located the man at his home and spoke to him concerning his behavior. He was advised by the officers that the resident did not wish to have any further contact with him and that he was to stay away from her.

Natural Death -- 500 Block Ridge Road, SW July 12, 3:05 p.m. A family member asked police to check the welfare of a Town resident. Police responded to the house and located a deceased elderly person inside the residence. The death appears to be from natural causes.

CRASHES

500 Block Maple Avenue, East -- July 1, 12:25 p.m. Three vehicles were traveling eastbound in the left lane on Maple Avenue. Driver-3 suddenly changed lanes into the left turn lane to turn into a shopping center parking lot. Vehicle-3 was still partially blocking the left lane and caused Driver-2 to abruptly stop her vehicle. Driver-1 was unable to stop in time, causing Vehicle-1 to strike the rear of Vehicle-2. Vehicle-3 was not struck, and the driver left the scene.

Maple Avenue and Berry Street, NE -- July 6, 3:06 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling westbound on Maple Avenue in the left lane. Vehicle-2 entered the intersection of Berry Street and stopped with traffic. Driver-1 was unable to stop in time due to a defect with her brakes, causing Vehicle-1 to strike the rear of Vehicle-2. Rescue personnel responded to evaluate Driver-2, but he declined transport to the hospital. Driver-1 was issued a summons for Defective Equipment.

Nutley Street and Maple Avenue, SW -- July 6, 8:17 p.m. Vehicle-2 was in the center lane traveling north on Nutley Street at Maple Avenue. Vehicle-1 (a tractor trailer) was in the right lane turning to go eastbound on Maple Avenue. As Driver-1 made the turn, he had to swing wide and struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 did not realize there was a collision and continued east on Maple. Driver-2 was able to get Driver-1 to stop at Maple Avenue and Branch Road. Minor damage was caused to both vehicles. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Nutley Street and Roland Street, SW -- July 7, 4:50 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling northbound on Nutley Street in the left lane. Vehicle-2 stopped for traffic. Driver-1 was unable to stop in time, causing Vehicle-1 to strike the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was unaware he struck the other vehicle and left the scene. Ofc. Sterling was able to contact Driver-1 who provided his full information. Vehicle-1 suffered no damage. Vehicle-2 suffered minor damage.

Marshall Road at Dellwood Drive, SW -- July 8, 4 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Nutley Street, turning right onto eastbound Marshall Road. Vehicle-1 was on Dellwood Drive turning left onto westbound Marshall Road. As Driver-1 made the turn, she was struck by Vehicle-2.

300 Block Maple Avenue, East -- July 9, 8:34 a.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Maple Avenue, in the turn lane to turn left into a parking lot. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue. As Driver-1 entered the turn, he was struck by Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield Right of Way.

Center Street and Locust Street, SW -- July 10, 12:28 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Center Street. Vehicle-1 was turning left from Locust Street to go northbound on Center. As Vehicle-1 pulled on to Center Street, he struck Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Maple Avenue and James Madison Drive, NW -- July 11, 9:05 a.m. Vehicle-2 was eastbound on Maple Avenue, turning left onto James Madison Drive. Vehicle-1 was attempting to cross over the eastbound lanes of Maple Avenue from the service road to go westbound on Maple. Vehicle-1 struck the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield Right of Way.

Kingsley Road and Cottage Street, SW -- July 11, 9:07 a.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Kingsley Road, stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Cottage Street. Vehicle-1 was traveling northbound on Cottage Street stopped at the stop sign. The two vehicles collided in the intersection. 2

00 Block Maple Avenue, East -- July 11, 11:55 a.m. Vehicle-1 was parked unoccupied in a private parking lot when it was struck by an unknown vehicle. The striking vehicle fled the scene without the driver providing their information.
