The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from Aug. 2 – 8, 2019.
INCIDENTS
Embezzlement -- Patron Insurance Services 301 Maple Avenue, West June 5, 7:14 a.m. An employee reported that another employee had embezzled money from the business in the last few months. This case is being investigated.
Attempted Fraud -- TD Bank 308 Maple Avenue, West July 21 between 1 and 2:28 p.m. Officers responded to assist with a possible fraud in progress. Officers were able to identify and interview the suspects. This case is being investigated.
Fraud -- Moorefield Creek Road, SW Aug. 8, 11 a.m. A resident reported that he received a phone call from a person claiming to represent the Social Security Administration. The person claimed he had outstanding criminal charges and asked the resident to pay a large amount of money. The resident was skeptical about the legitimacy of the call. He was told to Google the phone number to the Social Security Administration and to call them back. The resident Googled “Social Security Administration” and the phone number listed was 1-800-772-1213. The resident called the number found on the Google website and was routed back to the same person again. The resident ended up paying a large amount of money he allegedly owed on gift cards. Later on the same day, he was contacted a second time by the same caller requesting additional funds. At this time, the resident suspected it could be a scam and contacted the Vienna Police Department.
Fraud -- 200 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 8, 1:25 p.m. An officer was flagged on the roadway by another driver. The citizen reported that she was on the phone with an IRS employee and he was asking for a large amount of money. It was later determined that the person was impersonating an IRS employee scammed the citizen out of a large amount of money. Officers were able to contact the credit card company that paid the transaction. The credit card company was able to freeze the recent transactions, and the additional accounts before any money was taken.
Grand Larceny -- Giant 359 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 8, 7:23 p.m. A resident reported that while she was shopping for produce at Giant Food, a female approached her and started a conversation. She said during the conversation, she looked back at her shopping cart, where she had left her purse, and observed a man walking away quickly from her shopping cart. Once the resident went back to her shopping cart, she realized her wallet was missing. During the investigation, it was determined that many large purchases we made at local stores immediately after the wallet was taken. This case is being investigated.
Animal Case -- 200 Block Commons Drive, NW July 27 8:40 a.m. A resident reported that he was bitten by a dog while out walking. The dog was on a leash and out on a walk with a woman that is providing foster care for him. The bitten man was attempting to pet the dog on his head when the dog nipped his hand. The dog was placed on a ten-day quarantine.
Assault -- The Fresh Market 150 Branch Road, SE July 31, 3:15 p.m. A citizen reported that after he blew his horn at a driver that did not drive forward when a traffic light turned green, the other driver followed him through several streets within the Town of Vienna. Once the citizen parked in a parking lot and exited his vehicle, the other driver confronted him. Words were exchanged between both drivers. The unidentified driver then struck the citizen in the head, knocking him to the ground, and left the scene. The other driver was identified by police, but the victim refused to press charges.
Arrest - Drunk in Public -- 1400 Block of Desale St, SW July 31, 3:24 p.m. A resident reported an unknown subject was wandering in her backyard and appeared to be intoxicated. Officers responded to the residence and located the subject. Upon their interaction with the subject, officers detected signs of impairment. Ofc. Wallace arrested the 41-year-old man from Patrick St SE in Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with being Drunk In Public.
Narcotics Violation -- 7-11 427 Maple Avenue, East July 31, 11:54 p.m. While on routine patrol, PFC Williams initiated a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, narcotics were located inside the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was issued a summons for possession of Marijuana.
Suspicious Event -- 400 Block Holmes Court, NW Aug. 1 Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. A resident reported that someone had entered the backyard of her property and shut off the gas. It was later determined that the gas company had come in during the day and turned off the gas to replace the meter.
Animal Case -- Hope Advanced Veterinary Center 140 Park Street, SE Aug. 1, 10:20 p.m. An employee reported that a cat bit him during a procedure. The cat was placed on a 10-day quarantine.
Suspicious Event -- 100 Block East St, NE Aug. 1, 11:32 p.m. A resident wanted to talk with a police officer about how to report a missing adult.
Exposure -- Alma Street, SE – Delano Drive, SE Aug. 2, 10:20 a.m. A resident reported that she observed a suspicious man on the bike path. The resident decided to follow the man and saw him near a metal bridge. The subject had his pants to his ankles and was masturbating in public. The resident quickly left the area and called the police. Several officers responded and searched the surrounding areas but were not able to locate the subject.
Arrest - Drunk in Public -- Locust Street, SE Aug. 3, 1:11 a.m. Two residents reported an unknown subject was wandering in their backyards. Officers responded to the area and located the subject in one of the backyards of the residences. Upon their interaction with the subject, officers detected signs of impairment. Ofc. Farr arrested the 25-year-old man from East Indian Wells Place in Chandler, Ariz. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with being Drunk In Public.
Property Lost -- Jammin Java 227 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 3, 3:25 a.m. The man arrested reported to Ofc Farr that he had lost his cell phone before his contact with officers. The man stated that the last time he saw his cell phone was at Jammin Java. Officers searched the surrounding areas but were unable to find his cell phone.
Narcotics Violation -- 300 Block Walker Street, SW Aug. 3, 9:42 a.m. Officers responded to a noise complaint at this location. While interviewing a worker at the location went into his vehicle to get his wallet. Officers detected the smell of Marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, Marijuana was located. The suspect was issued a summons for possession of Marijuana.
Petit Larceny -- StarbucksM362 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 3, 3:20 p.m. An employee reported that an unknown man drove up to the drive-through without placing an order. The man reached through the drive-through window and stole a tip jar before driving off. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the man.
Suspicious Event -- 200 Block Park Street, SE Aug. 3, 3:45 p.m. A resident reported observing on surveillance video of a suspicious person looking into the windows of several parked vehicles.
Animal Case -- Hope Advanced Veterinary Center 140 Park Street, SE Aug. 3, 9:58 p.m. An employee reported that she was bitten multiple times by a stray cat during a medical evaluation. The cat’s injuries were severe and would require extensive ongoing medical care in addition to a 10-day quarantine. After discussing the options with the concerned citizen that had brought the stray cat and the staff at the facility, it was decided that euthanizing the cat would be the best course of action.
Suspicious Event -- 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE Aug. 4, 1 p.m. A concerned citizen reported screaming coming from nearby. Officers searched the area and located the residence that appeared to be the source of the screaming. Officers spoke with the resident about the screaming and determined that no violation of law had taken place.
Trespassing -- Giant 359 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 4, 4:26 p.m. Officers were requested to assist with three juveniles that were soliciting in the Giant Food parking lot area. The juveniles had been asked several times by Giant management to leave the premises before calling the police. Officers determined that the juveniles did not have a Town of Vienna solicitor’s license. The teens’ supervisor was contacted and agreed to pick up the juveniles and leave the area.
Domestic Assault -- 400 Block Adahi Road, SE Aug. 4, 5:42 p.m. A resident requested police assistance with a domestic altercation that had just taken place. Officers interviewed both residents involved in the altercation but were unable to determine who had started the altercation due to inconsistent accounts of the incident. Since it was mutual combat, both residents were advised on how to obtain arrest warrants for the assault. One of the involved residents left the residence to avoid any more altercations.
Vandalism -- 500 Block Council Court, NE Sometime between Aug. 4, 9:30 p.m. and Aug. 5, 10 a.m. A resident reported that sometime overnight, someone had splattered white paint all over her vehicle.
Suspicious Event -- 1000 Block Moorefield Creek Road, SW Aug. 4, 10:31 p.m. A resident reported that someone opened a package that was delivered to his home door, took all the contents out of the package, and threw them on his front lawn. His neighbors stated that they had collected the scattered packaging materials and the contents from his lawn.
Arrest - Domestic Assault -- 400 Block Orleans Circle, SW Aug. 5 between 12:20 a.m. and 12:46 a.m. A resident requested police assistance with a domestic assault involving a knife. Officers arrived on scene and spoke to everyone involved in the incident. It was determined that one of the subjects had assaulted the other one. Ofc. Colligan arrested a 52-year-old woman from Orleans Circle SW in Vienna. She was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was charged with Assault and Battery on a Family Member and served with a protective order.
Emotionally Disturbed Person -- Navy Federal Credit Union 820 Follin Lane, SE Aug. 5, 10:52 a.m. An employee requested police assistance with an emotionally disturbed person. After investigating the case, it was determined that the emotionally disturbed person needed medical assistance. A family member of the emotionally disturbed person responded and drove the person to a medical facility for further evaluation.
Property Found -- 200 Block Owaissa Court, SE Aug. 5, 4:01 p.m. A resident turned in a handgun to be destroyed that had belonged to her deceased grandmother.
Open Door/Window -- 300 Block Westview Court, NE Aug. 6, 6:45 a.m. Police responded to a 911 open line. Once on scene, officers found the front door of the residence ajar. Officers searched the interior of the house and located an elderly man. The man stated that he did not need any assistance but that his wife was missing. A few minutes later, the wife returned home and advised that she had called 911 to report a tree that fell on a house located directly behind their house. By this time the Fairfax County Fire Department was already on scene and took over the call.
Suspicious Event -- Caffe Amouri 107 Church Street, NE Aug. 6, 5:24 p.m. A citizen reported that a man was following her and making her feel uncomfortable. The man had left the area before police arrived. Officers interviewed the concerned citizen and an employee of the business.
10 Day Tow Notice -- Maple Avenue, West Aug. 7, 7:16 a.m. Traffic units responded to a complaint of a vehicle parked on the street for over a week. Officers placed a 10-day tow notice on the vehicle.
Lost Property -- Fosters Grill 138 Maple Avenue, West Aug. 7 between 3:20 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. A citizen reported accidentally leaving her wallet on a bench in front of Fosters Grill. Approximately five minutes later, the citizen remembered leaving the wallet and returned, but the wallet was gone.
Suspicious Event -- 450 Maple Avenue, East Aug. 7 12 p.m. A citizen reported that someone slashed a tire of his vehicle the day before. Since the tire was already replaced, the officer was not able to confirm the allegation.
Police Service -- 1000 Block Rachel Lane, SW Aug. 8, 11:22 a.m. Earlier in the day, an alarm call was generated for a residence. The homeowner was on vacation and requested that police respond back to the residence to meet a neighbor that had a key to his house. The homeowner requested that officers go into the residence to verify everything was ok. Officers went inside the house and found that everything was ok.
Found Property -- Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South Aug. 8, 9:42 p.m. A heavily damaged trailer tag was found in the Vienna Police Department front parking lot.
CRASHES
200 Block Maple Avenue, West -- July 28, 4:05 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling in the left lane of westbound Maple Avenue West intending to make a left turn into the parking lot for Jiffy Lube at 210 Maple Avenue West, Vienna. Vehicle-1 was traveling in the left lane of westbound Maple Avenue West behind Vehicle-2. Vehicle-2 started his left turn when he stopped suddenly for eastbound Maple Avenue East traffic. Vehicle 2’s rear-end still occupied part of the left lane and Vehicle-1 struck the right rear corner of Vehicle-2 causing property damage. Driver-1 and Driver-2 had conflicting statements as to road position and fault could not be determined.
500 Block Maple Avenue, East 1-- Aug. 1, 12:05 p.m. Vehicle-1 was entering Maple Avenue East from the parking lot at 521 Maple Avenue East, Vienna. Vehicle-1 was making a left turn to travel westbound on Maple Avenue East. Traffic for the eastbound travel lanes was stopped allowing Vehicle-1 to enter the roadway. Vehicle-2 was traveling eastbound on Maple Avenue East entering the left turn lane for East Street, NE. As Vehicle-2 entered the turn lane, Vehicle-1 struck Vehicle-2 in the right rear door causing property damage. Driver-1 at-fault - fail to yield the right of way.
200 Block Maple Avenue, East -- Aug. 1, between 1:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. Vehicle-1 was parked in the parking lot of 256 Maple Avenue East, an unknown vehicle struck Vehicle-1 in the left rear quarter panel and left the scene.
Cottage Street, SW and Walker Street, SW Aug. 3, 11:29 p.m. Driver-1 was traveling northbound on Cottage Street, SW approaching the intersection with Walker Street, SW, when a deer ran out directly in front of his vehicle. Driver-1 was unable to react quickly enough to avoid a collision with the deer. Vehicle-1 struck the deer head-on, causing front end damage. The deer ran off and was not located.
Pleasant Street, NW and Maple Avenue, West -- Aug. 6, 8:02 a.m. Vehicle-2 made a left turn onto Pleasant Street, NW from Maple Avenue West. At the same time, Vehicle- 1 was exiting a parking lot and entering Pleasant Street, NW. Vehicle-2 was traveling northbound on Pleasant Street, NW when Vehicle-1 exited the parking lot and struck Vehicle-2. Vehicle-1 driver at-fault - Fail to yield the right of way.
Maple Avenue, West and Nutley Street, NW -- Aug. 6, 1:52 p.m. Vehicle-2 was stopped at a red light in the 400 block of Maple Avenue West and the Nurlet Street, NW intersection. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Maple Avenue West approaching the same intersection. Vehicle-1 failed to stop for the red light in time, striking Vehicle-2 in the rear. Vehicle-1 driver at-fault -Fail to pay full time and attention.
1044 Ware Street, SW -- Aug. 7, 9:50 p.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling northbound on Ware Street, SW. Vehicle-2 was parked on the right side of the road in front of 1044 Ware Street, SW facing north. Vehicle-1 struck Vehicle-2 causing severe damage to both vehicles involved. The driver of Vehicle-1 stated she did not see the parked vehicle because it was dark in color. Vehicle-1 driver at-fault - Fail to pay full time and attention.
318 Maple Avenue, West -- Aug. 8, 11:45 a.m. Vehicle-1 and Vehicle-2 were driving Eastbound on the 300 Block of Maple Avenue West. Vehicle-2 stopped in traffic. Vehicle-1 was traveling directly behind Vehicle-2. Vehicle-1 was following too closely was not able to stop in time before rear-ending Vehicle-2. Vehicle-1 driver at fault – Following too close
