Vienna Police Highlights July 12 – July 18, 2019

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from July 12 – July 18, 2019.

INCIDENTS

Lost Property -- 1100 Block Moorefield Hill Court, SW Between Jan. 1 at 1a.m. and July 12 at 8 a.m. A resident reported that she lost some personal documents.

Telephone Case -- Birch Street, SW, between May 17 at 5 p.m. and July 12 at 8 p.m. A resident reported that she was receiving harassing emails from her ex-husband.

Fraud -- Patrol Insurance Services 301 Maple Avenue, West May 29, 12 p.m. An employee reported fraudulent activity made by a former employee.

Fraud -- Apple Federal Credit Union 419 Maple Avenue, East June 10, 4:06 p.m. An employee reported that a fraudulent check was passed at the bank.

Embezzlement -- Amphora Restaurant 377 Maple Avenue, West June 26, 9:16 a.m. A report was received from the Town’s Finance Department that the restaurant has failed to remit its meals tax for three months. A check was later received from the restaurant to cover the tax.

Embezzlement -- Falafel Street 235 Maple Avenue, East June 26, 9:17 a.m. A report was received from the Town’s Finance Department that the restaurant has failed to remit its meals tax for several months.

Grand Larceny -- 1000 Block Westwood Drive, NE Between July 2 at 8 a.m. and July 15 at 10 p.m. A resident reported a piece of jewelry that was missing from her residence.

Grand Larceny -- Grass Roots Fitness 512 Maple Avenue, West Between July 7 at 5 p.m. and July 9 at 6 a.m. A member of the Vienna Arts Society reported one of their benches was stolen from the sidewalk outside of the business.

Destruction of Property -- 1000 Block Cottage Street, SW Between July 11 at 9 p.m. and July 12 at 6:30 a.m. A resident reported that someone drove through her front yard, causing damage to the yard.

Suspicious Event -- Carters Glen Court, SW July 12 between 4 p.m. and 4:59 p.m. A juvenile sent a text to her friends, that was misinterpreted. An officer spoke to the juvenile, reviewed the text message, and determined there was no issue.

Lost Property -- 100 Block Patrick Street, SE Between July 12 at 5 p.m. and July 14 at 12 p.m. A resident reported that she lost personal documents.

Assist EMS -- Outback Steakhouse 315 Maple Avenue, East July 12, 11:15 p.m. Officers responded for a man sleeping behind the restaurant. The officers summoned rescue personnel to evaluate the man who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or some type of drug. The man was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Civil Dispute -- 500 Block Park Street, NE July 1,3 8:26 p.m. Officers responded to a dispute between a resident and her daughter’s piano teacher. The piano teacher advised the student arrived too late for her lesson and would have to leave. The resident was upset that the teacher would not see her daughter or give her a refund for the missed lesson. The resident was advised of the civil process if she wishes to pursue the matter.

Suspicious Event -- 900 Block Dale Court, SE July 13, 10:02 p.m. Officers responded to check the welfare of a resident who had sent some concerning texts to a friend. The resident was not at home but eventually contacted the police to verify that he was safe and not in need of any assistance.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- 600 Block Tapawingo Road, SW July 13, 4 p.m. ACO Barker placed a resident’s cat under quarantine after the cat bit a relative of the resident.

Suspicious Event -- Rose Kabob Restaurant 126 Maple Ave., West July 14 between 6:45 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. On July 15 a resident reported a verbal dispute she had with her father-in-law the previous night while they were eating dinner with family at a restaurant. The verbal exchange made the resident concerned for her safety.

Domestic Dispute -- Park Terrace Court, SE July 15, 12:03 a.m. A resident reported his ex-girlfriend was banging on his door. The ex-girlfriend advised she was trying to retrieve her belongings from the home. The resident permitted one of the officers to come in and retrieve the property.

Arrest – Narcotics Violation -- 1000 Block Park Street, SE July 15, 4:57 p.m. Sgt. Sheeran observed a traffic violation and initiated a traffic stop. Upon the officer’s interaction with the driver, he detected an odor of marijuana. The officer found the driver had a measurable amount of the drug. Sgt. Sheeran issued a summons to the 23-year-old man from Kempair Court in Woodbridge, Va. charging Possession of Marijuana. The man was released on his signature.

Vehicle Tampering -- 300 Block Adahi Road, SE Between July 15 at 9 p.m. and July 16 at 10:15 a.m. A resident advised an unknown person rummaged through her vehicle. Nothing appears to have been taken.

Illegal Dumping -- 1100 Block Drake Street, SW July 16 between 7 p.m. and 7:29 p.m. A resident reported an unknown person illegally dumped trash at the worksite of a home under construction.

Police Service -- 1000 Lynn Street, SW July 17 8:58 a.m. Officers conducted a welfare check on a resident at the request of one of their relatives.

Destruction of Property -- Navy Federal Credit Union 1007 Electric Avenue, SE July 17, 9:45 a.m. An employee reported that her ex-boyfriend damaged her vehicle while it was parked in the parking lot.

Civil Dispute -- 700 Block Upham Place, NW June 17 between 3 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. A resident reported a custody dispute he was having with his ex-wife. The resident was advised to report the incident to his attorney.

Juvenile Case -- Lawyers Road and Holmes Court, NW July 18, 1:35 a.m. PFC Williams observed a traffic offense and initiated a traffic stop. The officer found the vehicle was occupied by three juveniles. None of the juveniles had valid driver’s licenses, and they had taken their parent’s vehicle without permission. The juveniles were transported to their homes and released to their parents. Juvenile petitions are pending.

Trespassing -- Shell Gas Station 545 Maple Avenue, West July 18, 9:40 a.m. An employee reported a man, who had previously been trespassed, was back on their property. The man had left the gas station before officers arrived. The employee was advised of the warrant process should they wish to pursue charges.

Grand Larceny -- M3 Bike 204 Mill Street, NE July 18 between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The store’s owner reported that his daughter’s bicycle was taken from the store.

Assist EMS -- 100 Block Patrick Street, SE July 18, 8:06 p.m. Officers responded to assist rescue personnel with a resident who had overdosed on alcohol. The man was transported to an area hospital in non-life threatening condition.

CRASHES

380 Maple Avenue, West -- July 9 5:25 p.m. Vehicle-2 was left legally parked in the parking lot when it was struck by Vehicle-1 (an unknown vehicle). Driver-1 left the area without leaving their information.

Maple Avenue near Nutley Street, SW -- July 12, 1:50 p.m. Three vehicles were traveling eastbound in the left lane of Maple Avenue. Vehicle-2 and Vehicle-3 stopped in traffic. Vehicle-1 ran into the rear of Vehicle-2 and pushed it into the rear of Vehicle-3.

Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

820 Follin Lane, SE -- July 12, 5:09 p.m. Vehicle-2 was left legally parked in the parking lot when it was struck by Vehicle-1 (an unknown vehicle). Driver-1 left the area without leaving their information.

Park Street and Locust Street, SE -- July 15, 3:50 p.m. Vehicle-1 was traveling westbound on Locust Street entering the traffic circle at Park Street. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Park Street entering the circle when the vehicles collided.

150 Maple Avenue, West -- July 17, 1:40 p.m. Vehicle-2 was left legally parked in the parking lot when it was struck by Vehicle-1 (an unknown vehicle). Driver-1 left the area without leaving their information

Church Street near Lawyers Road, NW -- July 18, 11:50 p.m. Vehicle-2 was pulling into an unoccupied parking space on Church Street. Vehicle-1 had cleared that parking space and pulled into the next unoccupied parking space. Driver-1 decided to park in the original space and backed into Vehicle-2.
