Grandpups with Swedish Roots: Shirley Edwards of Springfield writes: “Gunner and Ammo are my Swedish Vallhund grandpups. Their breed originates in Sweden where they were used as herding dogs by the Vikings. In this photo, I have ‘herded’ them in my arms for a big hug. When they visit me, I hear their happy barks as they arrive at my front door. They enjoy scattering all their toys from their toy basket to find their favorite small, white stuffed poodle. Gunner and Ammo's herding skills are only evident when they rush to knock all the throw pillows from my sofa and push them together in a big pillow pile.”

A Curious Cat – Mary Anne and Tom O'Hare of Fairfax Station share this photo with a note: “This is Poppy. We adopted her from a shelter last year, having found her on a rescue website. We drove two hours in a snowstorm. When we asked about her, the shelter staff queried ‘Are you sure you want THAT one?’ Poppy joined two other cats in our home. She answers to no one. She is spunky, adventurous, and truly a curious cat. We learned that flowers are never safe in our home. Poppy’s owner is 17-year-old Kerry O’Hare (a junior at Lake Braddock).”

Loyalty with No Bounds: Ron Gird shares a photo taken during a winter storm in Fairfax in their front yard: “Our daughter, Michelle, and her loyal companion, Fenway, love to go out into the snow to play and enjoy the ‘white stuff.’ Fenway follows Michelle everywhere she goes. Even though Fenway would rather sit in her lap in front of the warm fireplace watching TV, loyalty has no bounds and no limits.”

‘Seemore’ – from Ohio to Burke: Noelle Garcia, 11, of Burke, with her cat, Seemore. He was found by her Uncle Paul in Ohio last summer, abandoned as a kitten along with 3 siblings who were adopted by other families. Noelle, who was visiting her grandparents in Ohio at the time, persuaded her parents to let her keep him. She spells his name Seemore because her grandma said he always wants to "see more." He is her first 4-legged pet and they are best friends.

Remembering Shirley, the Fish: Maria Garcia of Burke writes: “In memory of Shirley, our betta fish. Owned by Noelle Garcia, 11, of Burke, Shirley loved listening to poetry, mini-vacations at our neighbor's house, and road trips. She visited the Buckeye State several times and enjoyed a week at the Outer Banks last summer. St. Francis welcomed her to fish-heaven last November after she spent a unique and fulfilling 3 and a half years with our family.”

Meet Sully and Zeke: Lindsey Smith, Chief of Staff at Supervisor John C. Cook, Braddock District, Office in Burke shares a picture of “his family.” “Sully age 4 and Zeke age 3 have brightened the Smith house since their arrival. While Daddy stays busy as Chief of Staff to Braddock Supervisor John Cook, Mommy, Jill Westeyn, spends her days as a Federal employee but volunteers many hours to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and is on the Board of the Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. Sully and Zeke love to hike and take naps on their loving humans. For Halloween this year, Jill made Mario and Luigi costumes and actually won a couple contests. I also forgot that even though I work in Braddock, I live in Oak Hill in Sully, hence the pup's name. Whenever I see past Supervisor Michael Frey, he never asks how I'm doing, only Sully and Zeke.”
