Fifth graders from George Mason Elementary School in the City of Alexandria say “We want change” to lawmakers Saturday afternoon as they stand up to the nation’s largest gun lobby at a protest April 14 in Fairfax at the National Rifle Association headquarters on Waples Mill Road. Four students took turns speaking to concerned citizens, who have decried gun violence each month since the Dec. 14, 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 children and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Budding orators in safety orange T-shirts — the protective color universally recognized by hunters — are, from left: Elisabeth Peyton, 11, Matthew Heckel, 10, Casey Donahue, 11 and Lily O’Neil, 11. At the end of their talk, the four stood together with their arms interlocked: “We are strong but we are stronger together,” they told listeners.
