Four Running to Represent You in Congress
Independent Progressive
It was a dreary, threatening-to-rain Sunday afternoon, and I was a bit bored. It dawned on me that I really had not thought about the coming election right here in my own, new congressional district.

Independent Progressive/Master Plan for Transit Station Areas — Outgunned
It never looked like a fair fight. In the fall of 2009, when Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins assembled her Task Force of 25 or so to prepare a Comprehensive (Master) Plan for the Dulles rail corridor, it was clear the community was at a disadvantage. A handful of Reston volunteers faced a phalanx of hired gun slingers, men (100 percent men!) representing commercial developers and their lawyers. The gunslingers were pros doing their jobs, unified in a clear sense of purpose — to maximize profit. Most had worked “community” task force gigs before and knew the county staff advising the Task Force. None lived in Reston.
Opinion: Independent Progressive: You Can’t Open the Farmers Market During a Pandemic
Back in March and April as the Covid 19 pandemic peaked, we were warned that it was unlikely the Reston Farmers Market could be opened for the 2020 season as scheduled (April 25), if at all.

Patrick Kane: March 5, 1936 to March 5, 2013.
On Saturday, March 9, St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church on Wiehle Avenue was filled to overflowing to pay a final tribute to Patrick Kane. Patrick died on March 5, his 77th birthday and just five days before the 50th anniversary of his marriage to his beloved wife Susan. He fought long, hard battles with devastating strokes and finally cancer before leaving us.

Too many legislators regard special interest gifts as entitlements. While they profess to support limiting “tangible” gifts to a minimal value and more reporting, they fiercely guard their rights to certain gifts which supplement their incomes.
Column: Fall Sports Fun and Folly
In my spare time I’m a bit of sports junky, especially for football and baseball. Since childhood, my favorites have been the Washington football team and the Detroit Tigers.

Column: Election Day 2013
Some friends who work on election issues for the Democratic Party have pestered me to stand up and serve as an election officer. The last couple of elections Republican election officers substantially outnumbered Democrats working the polls—not a healthy situation. So, I bit the bullet and signed up.
Commentary: Police View from Inside a Crown Vic
Last Friday, I participated in a “ride along” with a Fairfax County Police Officer from the Reston Station during an eleven and a half hour evening shift patrolling Reston and part of Great Falls. I sat next to my officer-partner’s computer in a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser.
