Chantilly Bible Church in Chantilly is holding its Vacation Bible School this week, July 7-11, for 185 children. Called "The Jesus Expedition," children learn Bible stories while exploring the Brazilian jungle, Egyptian desert, and other exotic locals.
Children ranging from pre-kindergarten to third grade and grades 4-6 take part in arts and crafts, games, Bible lessons and music classes.
Volunteers teach lessons that revolve around specific Bible stories; for example, when children visit the Mount Everest site, the lesson is on perseverance. That ties into the story of Jesus restoring Bartimaeus' sight.
The week "helps teach kids how they can help their community and give back to their community all while having fun," said Robin Dunning, acting director of VBS.
At the end of the week, parents are invited to an assembly and a cookout where kids perform the songs that they have learned.
"We provide kids with a safe environment in which they can learn and have fun while parents feel comfortable leaving them there for the morning," said Dunning.
