The “More Power to You” program is an overview of how local government works and how it relates to Virginia State government, presented by The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area (LWVFA) in cooperation with Fairfax County Public Schools Adult and Community Education. The session will take place once a month for four months from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Fairfax County Government Center. The first session will be “Activating Your Citizenship” on Tuesday, Sept. 16, followed by “Evolution and Powers of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors” on Oct. 28, “Navigating Authorities, Commissions and Departments” on Nov. 18 and “Functions of the Fairfax County School Board” on Dec. 16. Each class will be enhanced by the participation of prominent guest speakers representing various aspects of county government. The fee for the four two-hour evening sessions is $25, which covers all materials. Participants who attend all four sessions will receive certificates of completion. September 11th Generation Organization, a nationwide, youth-led program associated with a similar group called Freedom's Answer, was created to encourage a more civic-conscious generation by cultivating the leaders of tomorrow. One of the group's Web site projects is a "Heroes of the Week" feature. Active and concerned students are recognized for their hard work and heroism of all sorts. The 25th Anniversary Adopt-a-Flag Program calls for the display of American flags along Burke Centre Parkway each year on various holidays and other notable dates. Currently, the program consists of 50 flags to be displayed, which residents may adopt. The adoption fee is $50 for a two-year period. The adoption fee covers the cost of the flags, poles, pipe sleeves, flag storage and general upkeep. Flag adopters will receive a certificate of adoption noting the number of their particular flag. Those interested in adopting a flag should stop by the Burke Conservancy office to complete a short form and make payment. Adoption certificates will be issued by mail. United Community Ministries (UCM) is looking for donations for the needy. Items can be given through church or community organizations or dropped off at 7511 Fordson Road between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday–Friday. UCM can schedule pickups for donations of food by churches or other organizations. Items that are most needed are spaghetti sauce, pasta, macaroni and cheese, dry cereal, beans, single-serving cereal for homeless care packages, diapers and paper and plastic grocery bags.
