Northern Virginia basketball tips off

The Northern Virginia basketball season tipped off Tuesday night with both the West Potomac boy’s and girl’s teams in action on the road.

The West Potomac boy’s team got its campaign off on the right foot with a 57-55 win over Washington-Lee in Arlington.

The Wolverines used a 9-2 run in the beginning of the fourth quarter to grab a cushion they would never relinquish. It would come in handy down the stretch after West Potomac missed several foul shots, allowing Washington-Lee back in the game. The Generals missed two potential game-tying shots on the game’s final possession.

West Potomac junior forward Keevyn Hankins had 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, while junior Martez Redfearn pitched in eight points and four rebounds. Guard Jalen Rosen (pictured at right) added eight points as well.

“We started playing good defense at the end,” said Redfearn. “That’s how we came out with the win.”

The West Potomac girl’s team wasn’t so lucky against Washington-Lee, losing 44-30.

The Mount Vernon boy’s basketball team opened the season with a 85-65 victory over South County. Mount Vernon and West Potomac meet in both boy’s and girl’s basketball this Friday night.
