Three Adults, Two Teens Win Seats on MCC Board

Five McLean district residents have won or have been re-elected to seats on the McLean Community Center’s 2012-2013 Governing Board. The election was held from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the McLean Day 2012 festival at Lewinsville Park. The Center is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

The McLean Symphony’s Season Finale, ‘Ode to Joy’

The McLean Symphony (TMS) presents its 2011–2012 Season Finale concert on Saturday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Langley High School located at 6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean (route 193), ending its year-long celebration of 40 consecutive years of making music in the greater D.C. area under the baton of music director Dingwall Fleary.

Two Thomas Jefferson High School students, Megan Ganley and Rachel Chuang, earned the Girl Scouts highest honor this year--the Gold Award.

Beautifying Downtown Herndon

Artist Keith Naquin paints mural on NAPA Auto Parts building.

Since April, Keith Naquin has been hard at work on a brick wall. The artist was recently contracted by the Council for the Arts of Herndon to transform the rear of the NAPA Auto Parts building in downtown Herndon into a picturesque glimpse of rural life.

MCA Hosts Annual Membership Meeting

Association says farewell to president, provides McLean Community Foundation update.

The McLean Citizens Association hosted their annual members meeting Wednesday, May 23, saying farewell to President Rob Jackson and welcoming new president Sally Horn. Jackson, who is wrapping up his fifth term (the most of any MCA president), said he was proud of the MCA’s work on a number of issues over the past five years.

Salvation Army celebrates William Booth Society.

Donors, representatives and friends of the Salvation Army National Capital Area Command celebrated the inaugural reception of the William Booth Society May 17 at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington. “William Booth Society members help make certain that The Salvation Army remains financially strong and ready to meet the challenges of serving the needs of our community,” said National Capital Area Commander Major Steve Morris.

Making the World a Better Place

Daisy Troop 3113 members at Virginia Run Elementary School has been working all year to earn 10 petals for their uniform which teaches them the Girl Scout law. This week the troop members earned their final petal — the pink petal which represents "Make the world a better place.” To make the world a better place, the girls planted pink, white and yellow flowers in the flower bed under the sign at Virginia Run Elementary School. One of the parents, Russel Ramey, edged the flower bed, cleared it of weeds and mulched it in preparation for the day. Good Citizens Essay Award

The Lane's Mill Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution selected Centreville High School senior Kevin Chow as the recipient of the chapter's DAR Good Citizens Essay Award. Chow, who will attend Virginia Tech, was presented with the award by Chapter Regent Charlene Gross and DAR Good Citizen Chapter Chairman Pauline Herpy.

Hundreds honored at the Girl Scouts Precious Medals Ceremony in West Springfield.

Over two hundred people gathered Tuesday night, May 15, in West Springfield to honor Girl Scouts of Association 52 of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital (GSCNC) at their Fourth Annual Spring Precious Medals Ceremony titled "100 years of Helping Hands."

Gray Alan Combs, Jr., 22, died after encounter with police.

Fairfax County police have released the name of the man who died after officers shot him on Saturday, May 19. Gray Alan Combs, Jr., 22, "of no fixed address" died after he was taken to a hospital, police said.
