Meals on Wheels expands to Saturday delivery.

It's a labor of love for Nancy and Buzzie Harris, who for the last year and a half have been delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors as volunteers for Senior Services of Alexandria.

'Waltzing to Vienna’ With McLean Orchestra

McLean Orchestra announces “Waltzing to Vienna” gala plans.

The halls came alive with the sound of music—just a slight variation on the famous Von Trapp family story theme—when soprano Melissa Mino sang that song for the sponsors, patrons and friends of the McLean Orchestra on Sunday afternoon. The event, hosted by Nicholas Kalis and his fiancé Nina Goodarzian at their home in McLean, was appropriately titled “Waltzing to Vienna” since the orchestra’s annual gala fundraiser will be held at the Embassy of Austria on April 26, 2014. Emcee, Past President and Advisor to the President of the Board Dr. Wayne Sharp made the formal announcement as guests enjoyed Austrian wines and snacks made by Chef Rachel Brosh of Petite! Catering.

This time of year it is not uncommon to worry about meals, entertaining visiting relatives, or finding the time to shop and decorate. But for some members of the community, the worries are more basic.

If the hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m., Judge William D. Hamblen is enrobed and on the bench. Prosecutors, defense lawyers, the defendant, security and visitors are in their respective places. All quiet. Hamblen is the retired chief judge of the 31st judicial district of the Commonwealth, Prince William County. He is well-respected and expects nothing but the best in courtroom manner, this includes the attire for brothers and sisters at the bar, defendants and anyone just watching.

Allan R. Plumley, Jr.

Allan R. Plumley, Jr. died on Dec. 26, 2013 at Virginia Hospital Center, in Arlington, due to complications following a fall. He was 80 years old. A fourth generation lawyer, Mr. Plumley was born in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 14, 1933, and raised in Wilmington, Del., where his father, a patent attorney, was an executive with DuPont.

Present Needing to be Accounted For

As a stage IV non-small cell lung cancer diagnosee/patient/survivor/anomaly, living long--whether prospering or not, is not the simple and presumptive proposition I had anticipated. No more do I anticipate living the same number of years and in the same relative good health that my parents (both deceased), experienced well into their 80s. Now, my life revolves around my oncologist and the CT Scans and lab work that precede our recurring appointments.

Gala Raises $100,000

Center for Alexandria’s Children honors three for work with at-risk children.

The Center for Alexandria’s Children, a public-private partnership that serves abused and neglected children, raised a record $100,000 and honored three Alexandrians who have shown dedication and service to improving the lives of Alexandria’s children at its fourth annual Gala Benefit on Feb. 28 at Virtue Feed & Grain in Old Town. Alexandria residents Lissa and Dagobert Soergel were presented with the Center’s 2013 Champion for Children Award for their work in founding and expanding Child and Family Network Centers (CFNC), an organization which provides preschool education for at risk children in Alexandria and Arlington.

Last month, The Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna (SCOV) pulled off their 14th annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Worship, hosted by Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Vienna. This month, the SCOV was ready to present the funds collected at the well-attended service to representatives of the two charitable organizations chosen by SCOV as this year’s recipients of the collection.
