Seventh Annual Future Leaders of America World Martial

Arts Championship sponsored by Juan Davis and UMAC

(Universal Martial Arts Center). The event was held at The Owl School in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Feb. 23.

In the Black Belt Divisions: Daniel McCarthy received First Place in Forms and Third Place in Sparring; and Marc McCarthy received Second Place in Sparring and Third Place in Forms. In the Under Belt Divisions: Charles Brennan was Grand Champion, First Place in Forms, and Second Place in Sparring; Thomas Fagan was Second Place in Forms; Borja Gutierrez was First Place in Sparring and Third Place in Forms; Matthew Maguire was First Place in Forms and Third Place in Sparring; William Acevedo was Third Place in Forms and Sparring; and Alexander Eshelman was Third Place in Forms and Sparring.

David T. Boddie has been appointed the new marketing director for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Boddie's career includes working for three chambers of commerce with regional economic development organizations and a national leadership position at the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of the Chief Counsel for Advocacy in Washington, D.C., as director of state and local government affairs and business relations.

Rockville resident Charles Short, director of Montgomery County's Department of Health and Human Services, has been named secretary for Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Washington. He will start his new position on July 1.

Honored on Monday, April 8 by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce for heroic actions and community service for 2001 were:

Sgt. Antonio DeVaul of Rockville, an officer with the Maryland National Capital Park Police, was awarded a silver medal for his Aug. 11 rescue in Bethesda of a motorist who was partially submerged in rising flood waters.

Jon Berry and John Ferguson, both residents of Rockville, and Rockville Volunteer Fire Fighters, were awarded bronze medals for rescuing two people trapped in a single-family house fire on Nov. 23.
