Doris Jackson has been approved as principal of Wakefield High School, 4901 S. Chesterfield Road. Jackson, who now serves as assistant principal at Wakefield, will take over the principalship on July 1, 2002, on the retirement of current principal Marie Shiels-Djouadi.

Jackson came to Arlington Public Schools in 1990 as director of counseling services at Wakefield. Assistant principal at Wakefield since 1998, she has supervised the ninth grade Foundation Program, supervised and evaluated teachers in seven disciplines, organized and supervised the Summer Institute and Standards of Learning remediation programs and served as principal's designee in Shiels-Djouadi’s absence.

Jackson is a 1968 graduate of the District of Columbia Teachers College and holds a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She also has completed the principal endorsement program at George Mason University.

Kathleen Francis has been appointed principal of Williamsburg Middle School, 3600 N. Harrison St. Francis, who now serves as assistant principal at Williamsburg, will take over the principalship on July 1, 2002, on the retirement of current principal Margaret McCourt-Dirner.

Francis began her career with the Arlington Public Schools as a HILT teacher at Wakefield High School and Kenmore Middle School. She served as a HILT resource specialist at Yorktown High School and teacher mentor at Swanson and Kenmore middle schools. Francis also coordinated the county's HILT Summer School Program and Middle School Summer Program.

As assistant principal at Williamsburg, she has assisted in directing the instruction program for the more than 900 Williamsburg students and the 105 employees who carry it out. Her main duties have included instructional planning, building management, staff development and evaluation and school safety.

A 1975 graduate of Framingham State College in Framingham, Mass., Francis holds a master's degree in Spanish education from New York University. She is also certified in K-12 administration.

Long Branch Elementary School is hosting a Plant Sale on Saturday, April 20, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., offering perennials and annuals from Craven's Nursery and over 50 varieties of native plants from Virginia Natives. Long Branch is located at 33 N. Fillmore St., between Route 50 and Pershing Drive. The school plans to develop a series of habitat-friendly teaching gardens and to become a certified schoolyard habitat with the National Wildlife Federation.

The Arlington Scorpions are a U-14 boys soccer team that has been invited to play in the Gothia Cup in Sweden. To help raise funds for the upcoming trip to Sweden, they are sponsoring a multifamily yard sale on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A rain date has been set for Saturday, April 27. Items for sale include furniture, antiques, sporting goods, toys, games, books, household goods and baked goods. The sale will be held at 3601 N. Glebe Road. The Scorpions have captured first place in their division in the National Capital Soccer League for the last two seasons. The Teen Soccer Club of Arlington and Falls Church begins its spring season this Saturday, April 20. High-school-age girls who want to play should contact their coaches or call the Teen Soccer Club at 703-532-2774 for a team.

The Fine Arts Apprentice Recital-Exhibit will be held at Gunston Arts Center, 2700 S. Lang St., at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. The event features high-school musicians, dancers, actors and visual artists who are members of Arlington Public Schools' 2001-02 Fine Arts Apprentice Program. The event is free.
