Most Successful Programs: The Cougars have one of the best all-around sports programs in the 28-school region. The Cougars had top teams in boys and girls track, baseball, softball and girls basketball, in addition to field hockey and soccer for both boys and girls.

2001-02 Season: The Oakton girls track team won the indoor girls and boys regional titles. The football team made the regional postseason. The boys basketball team made the state tournament after placing second in the Northern Region. Oakton had individual winners in cross country, track and swimming last season, as well.

Historic Achievements: Other than the 2000 AAA Virginia state title in baseball, Oakton has yet to garner another state title in any of the major sports. But it has been on the cusp of quite a few. The 1998 football team lost out on a Northern Region football championship to Centreville with a 21-12 loss. The boys basketball team made it to the quarterfinals last year before falling to the eventual state champs from Granby by two points. In 2001, the girls basketball team lost to Hampton in the state final game; it was the furthest any Lady Cougar hoop squad has ever gone.

Famous Athletic Graduates: Eugune Chung was a first-round draft pick in the NFL draft by the New England Patriots. Katy Benko, a 2000 graduate and former softball star, is presently in the midst of a country-western singing career, opening for acts like Brooks and Dunn.
