<bt>Volunteer Fairfax is accepting nominations for its tenth annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards, "A Salute to Volunteers." <mh>FISH Seeking Manager

<bt>Herndon-Reston FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help), a 30-year-old, not for profit organization serving Reston and Herndon, seeks a manager for its thrift store, the Bargain Loft. This volunteer position offers an opportunity to serve area neighbors by generating revenue to support FISH community service. These services focus on providing quick response to needs for rent and utility supplements, pharmacy bills, rides to medical appointments and seasonal food baskets, among other things. FISH and the Bargain Loft have no paid staff. All of its work is accomplished through volunteers.

The manager's position consists of leading a group of volunteers in all merchandising and operational aspects of running a small retail store. No specific background is required, although previous retail experience is helpful. Call 703-437-0600.

<mh>FISH Needs Volunteers

<bt>Herndon-Reston FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) desperately needs volunteers on Saturdays to serve as cashiers at its thrift shop The Bargain Loft. Located at 311 Spring St. in Herndon, the store hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and the minimum time commitment is two hours. The Loft can always use volunteers for the other times it is open. The hours during the week are 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday-Friday. FISH also needs drivers for its assistance program to drive the elderly or infirm to their doctor’s office. The Loft needs drivers to assist with pickup and delivery of furniture on Sundays. Call Mary Kaye at 703-437-0600.

<mh>Herndon Rotary Club Scholarships

<bt>The Herndon Rotary Club is accepting applications for their annual scholarship programs: one $6,000 four year college scholarship ($1,500 per year), and one $2,000 two year college or vocational scholarship ($1,000 per year). Applicants must be graduating seniors at Herndon High School or any high school senior residing within the Town of Herndon. Applicants will be judged on the basis of citizenship, extra curricular activities, two essays, letters of recommendation, and scholarship. Deadline for submission is May 3. <mh>Becca Murray on her way up

<bt>Becca Murray, a 2000 graduate of Herndon High School, has been selected assistant stage manager in the Mary Washington College production of "Gemini." The performances of "Gemini" are scheduled for Feb. 14-16, and 21-23, at 8 p.m. and Feb. 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. at the Klein Theatre. Tickets cost $6 ($4 for students and seniors). <mh>Preschool registration at the Herndon Community Center

<bt>Registration has begun for the 2002-03 preschool program at the Herndon Community Center. Openings are available for both the Tuesday/Thursday class for ages 3-4 and the Monday/Wednesday/Friday class for ages 4-5. Each class meets from 9 a.m. to noon. All talent will be screened and selected by the Festival Entertainment Committee and applicants will be notified by mail if selected to participate or not. The performance sets are 45 minutes long and will be a gratis showcasing of Herndon talent.

<bt>The George Washington University Virginia Campus and the Loudoun Museum present "George Washington: Charting New Territories in Leadership," on Thursday, Feb 21 from 3-5 p.m. at the GW Virginia Campus, 20101 Campus Way, Ashburn. It is a special symposium celebrating George Washington's birthday and the 10-year anniversary of GW's Virginia campus. The panel will explore Washington's connections to Northern Virginia and Loudoun County. Moderating the panel will be Doug Foard, Ph.D., the executive director of the Loudoun Museum.
