Chorus Explores Different Cultures through Song

Dranesville Elementary School received an early holiday present Thursday when representatives of the school's newest business partner, Northwest Federal Credit Union in Herndon, presented principal Lucinda Romberg with a $2,250 check for the school's Homework Club, which assists students in grades second through sixth with their school work.

The presentation was followed by the annual winter concert, Sing Around the World, performed by the school's chorus, made up of fifth and sixth graders. The song selections were traditional favorites from several different cultures including a Yoruba native song from Nigeria, a French Canon, an American Folk song, a Latin selection, a Chassidic Round, and carols in Italian, English and Old English.

The chorus repeated the concert later Thursday night for parents and then again on Friday at the Herndon Reston Community Center and the Somerset Retirement Home. The concert was conducted by Patricia Fraker and Donna DeVito provided the musical accompaniment on piano.
