Bank Robbery is Charged

<bt>Fairfax County police say an Alexandria man tried to rob a bank in Chantilly, Tuesday morning, Feb. 4. But he didn't get to take the money and run; instead, officers nabbed him as he tried to leave.

The man is Donald E. Burrill, 24, of 1 West Bellefonte Ave. in Alexandria. According to police, he was in the BB&T Bank at 13821 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in the Sully Plaza Shopping Center, around 11 a.m., when the incident occurred.

Police say Burrill allegedly approached a Manassas man, 29, employed there as a teller, and demanded money. However, the teller was able to distract Burrill and notify the manager of the attempted robbery.

The manager called police, and responding officers surrounded the bank and apprehended Burrill as he walked out. He was charged with robbery and was held without bond at the Adult Detention Center. He has an April 1 court date.

<sh>Truck-Ban Bill on the Move

<bt>Del. Gary Reese's (R-67th) truck-ban bill is on the move. It's been tweaked a bit, but the basic premise is the same. It would require the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to act within nine months of receiving requests to ban commercial through-truck traffic on particular roads.

Currently, the CTB has no time limit, and some Fairfax County requests have still gotten no response — after two years of waiting. Reese's bill, HB 1457, passed Saturday in the House of Delegates by a vote of 87-12. Del. Tim Hugo's (R-40th) similar bill was incorporated into it. The bill would apply to both primary and secondary roads, and next stop is the Senate.

"We are requiring the CTB to respond in a more expedient manner so citizen concerns don't go unanswered for longer than necessary," said Reese. "Western Fairfax is concerned with the safety of its citizens due to the traffic on its secondary roads, and we don't want to wait years for a response from the CTB," added Hugo.

Kimmel appeared last Tuesday, Jan. 28, in General District Court and, at that time, nearly all the charges against him were dropped. However, he had a Feb. 5 court date for the marijuana-distribution charge.
