Virginia Run Elementary will host the 2003 Family Fun Night on Friday, June 13 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Events will include raffles for parents and children, a silent auction, face painting, balloon art, fortune teller, karaoke and food. Leila Quinones, a Centreville High School student, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference from July 7-17 in Washington, D.C. NYLC is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Quinones will be among 400 outstanding National Scholars from around the country to attend the conference.

Three college students from the area recently graduated from Bridgewater College:

* Kevin Flora, son of Patricia Flora of Centreville and the late Karl Flora, graduated cum laude with a degree in mathematics.

* Ken Knight, son of Ken and Debi Knight of Centreville, graduated with a degree in information systems management.

* Anthony Richardson, son of Betty C. Henderson of Centreville, graduated with a degree in information systems management.

Nicole C. Hamilton-Brown, a 1999 graduate of Centreville High School, was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force on May 18. She graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Col., with a bachelor of science degree in political science and a minor in Chinese. She will be stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., for navigation training.

Jessica L. Lightburn, daughter of Centreville's Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lightburn, recently graduated from Furman University in Greenville, SC.

Two college students from the area recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame:

* Brett Thompson graduated with a bachelors of science degree in chemical engineering. Thompson has been commissioned Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

* Michael Baird graduated with a bachelors of science degree in electrical engineering. Baird has been commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

A total of ten teams from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) competed in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, an international event in which teams of students brainstorm and problem-solve solutions to given problems. Local teams included:

* Robinson Secondary School, ninth place in problem 2, "Know It All," division 3.

* Bull Run Elementary School, 26th place in problem 3, "Classics … Put A Spin on It," division 2.

* Robinson Secondary School, 28th place in problem 3, "Classics…Put A Spin on It," division 3.

* Carson Middle School, 17th place in problem 5, "Fooled Ya," division 2.

* Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, 17th place in problem 5, "Fooled Ya," division 3.

Westfield High School seniors need to purchase their All-Night Grad Party tickets, which are on sale in the main office. Committee members depend on the proceeds from ticket sales to purchase games and prizes for the party to be held on June 19. The price is $5

Centreville High School's After-Grad Committee needs volunteers. If you're a parent of a graduating senior at CVHS, volunteer to lend a hand at the After-Grad Party on Wednesday, June 18, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Junior parents are needed also. Registration is in progress for Centreville Preschool's "themed" summer camp program. There is still a one day per week session being offered on Mondays, beginning on July 7 and ending on Aug. 13. The fee for this six-week program is $132. Call 703-830-5656.

A Summer Band and Orchestra Camp will be held June 30-July 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Franklin Middle School. Cost is $140/student or $150 after June 6. Students will study the following instruments: all brass, woodwinds, percussion and string instruments. The camp is offered to the following band and strings students: grades 3-10, beginning band/orchestra, cadet band/orchestra, concert band/orchestra and symphonic band/orchestra. The Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland is seeking local families to help with the peace and reconciliation effort in Northern Ireland. Consider hosting a pair of Protestant and Roman Catholic teens (boys or girls ages 15 to 18) in your home for four weeks this summer.  To be eligible, families must provide a safe-neutral setting for the teens to get to know one another, a single bedroom for them to share, and day-long adult supervision. World Heritage is seeking local host families for high school boys and girls from Spain, France, Germany, Thailand, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico or Brazil through World Heritage International Student Exchange Program. Host families provide room, board, and guidance for a teenager living thousands of miles from home. Students are well screened and are selected based on academic performance, English proficiency, teacher recommendations and personal interviews. Couples, single parents and families with or without children in the home are encouraged to apply. The students arrive shortly before school begins in fall 2003. A Chantilly High Alumni Club is being started by Debra Weeks Alexander and her husband Joe, co-presidents of the Chantilly Athletic Booster Club. They hope to reunite Chantilly grads, as well as their parents, and get them involved in school spirit to make Chantilly a real, hometown school.
