On March 4, social studies teacher Janet Croon took
nine of her IB Twentieth Century Topics students to
George Washington University’s Elliott School of
International Affairs for a conference on democracy in
South America. Along with over 150 area high school
students, the nine South Lakes seniors attended
presentations on populism and debated foreign policy
issues such as the trade embargo with Cuba. Guest
speakers included former President of Costa Rica
Miguel Angel Rodriguez.
Junior David Chang and senior Mari Oikawa won first
place in the instrumental and vocal categories
respectively at the local level of the Virginia Lions’
Club Bland Memorial Music Scholarship Contest. David
(piano) played Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in g
sharp minor and Mari (mezzo soprano) sang Alessandro
Scarlatti’s aria “O cessate di piagarmi.” David and
Mari won $100 prizes and will advance to the regional
level of the competition.
