The Board of Supervisors, at their meeting on Monday, May 5, recognized the following citizens and organizations for their achievements and contributions to the community.

* William Brannon, of Reston, an eighth grader at Herndon Middle School, won first place in the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge contest. Brannon won the final round by knowing that "vexillology" meant the study of flags. He competed against 800,000 fourth through eighth graders from across the country and won a $25,000 scholarship for his efforts.

* Kathy Vernon, of Reston, was recognized for her commitment as a Red Cross volunteer in Fairfax County, but also nationally as well. She was on the scene when the Red Cross opened an emergency shelter in Herndon this past winter during a natural gas outage and winter storm, feeding and housing residents at the shelter, working with media and county officials and supervising the closing of the shelter. While located in the Dranesville district, the shelter had an impact on residents of both the Hunter Mill and Sully districts as well.

* South Lakes High School Sports Teams:

The football team won the 2002 Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 Championship while the boys basketball team earned the 2003 Northern Region Championship in double overtime and advanced to the Virginia High School League State Championship.
