Kathy Smith for Sully Schools

Kathy Smith came to represent Sully on the School Board in a special election less than two years ago after Gary Reese was elected to the General Assembly.

Early on in her tenure, Smith asked an innocuous question: If the School Board couldn't reduce average class size, could they do something about very large classes, classes with more than 30 students? The answer was yes, and with what turned out to be a modest expenditure, the schools were able to make a significant dent in the largest classes.

Smith is a former teacher, a parent of school-aged children and a PTA activist. Her background and direct approach make her a good addition to the School Board.

Her opponent, Carl Cecil, is a West Point-educated father of four with an upbeat outlook on the schools. Sully district schools will benefit from his continuing involvement.
