Fun for First First Fairfax

The City of Fairfax kicks off its bicentennial celebration on Dec. 31, with First Fairfax. "It's going to be the best of its kind anywhere in the region," said City Councilmember R. Scott Silverthorne.

Events are planned from 6 p.m. until after midnight across downtown Fairfax including children's areas, ice skating, carriage rides, comedy shows and laser light shows.

Planners hope to appeal to people of all ages with the variety of different events. "We want to make this a very family-friendly event," Silverthorne said. "The goal is to have something for children, young people and the empty-nesters."

Many downtown restaurants are filling, so reservations are suggested. In addition, Silverthorne said, the city is trying to get more food vendors to come.

Most of the streets downtown will be closed, but shuttle buses will run from George Mason University and Fairfax High School. The only fee would be for food purchases or the rental of ice skates.

Silverthorne credited the event sponsors with making the night possible. "We're very appreciative of the strong support of the business community for this event," he said.
