Dugald Gillies of Arlington, senior director of development in the Paul Greenberg House, celebrated 15 years of service at Syracuse University. He was honored at a recent ceremony with a pin for fine work and high quality of service.

Army Reserve Pvt. Jason C. King, the son of Lysiane Keal of Dumfries, and John King of Arlington, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Arlington County board members voted to provide start-up funding for a scholarship to honor former chairman Charles P. Monroe. The board approved a contribution of $1,000 in seed money for a Charles P. Monroe Community Service Scholarship at the Arlington Community Foundation (ACF). Monroe served on the county board from 2000 to 2003, and was its chairman at the time of his death nearly two years ago.

Arlington resident Duane Parde was appointed by Secretary of State Colin Powell to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the nation's largest nonpartisan, individual membership organization of state legislators. Parde will serve as a representative of state and local government interests. The commission will provide the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Department of State, recommendations on issues related to education, science, communications, and culture, and the formulation and implementation of U.S. policy. Parde lives in the Ballston area of Arlington.
