Fairfax residents, Navy Seaman Kevin E. Richardson and Navy Seaman Christopher D. Lighten, and their fellow shipmates assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, recently responded to a distress call from an Italian merchant vessel. Upon receiving the call, Richardson's ship dispatched an HH-60H Seahawk helicopter to transport a wounded Italian sailor to the aircraft carrier, where he received medical attention.

Richardson is a 1995 graduate of Fairfax High School and joined the Navy in February 2002. He is the son of E. A. Richardson Jr. of Fairfax.

Lighten is a 2001 graduate of Fairfax High School.

The USS George Washington is homeported in Norfolk, Va.

The following local residents participated recently in the seizure of an estimated 2,800 pounds of hashish with an estimated value of $11 million, after intercepting a small Arabian sea vessel in the North Arabian Sea, while assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), homebased in Camp Pendleton, Calif.:

Marine Corps Cpl. David S. Barrett, son of Susan D. Traylor of Wakefield, Va. and Eugene S. Barrett Jr. of Fairfax. Barrett joined the Marine Corps in October 2001.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jennifer S. Torres, daughter of Wendey A. and Scott D. Wolf of Fairfax. Torres joined the Marine Corps in March 2001.

Marine Corps Capt. Thomas H. Chalkley, son of Lillian P. and Henry G. Chalkley of Fairfax. Chalkley is a 1991 graduate of Robinson High School of Fairfax. He joined the Marine Corps in April 1992.
