Waynewood's 4th Celebrated

The Waynewood Independence Day Celebration kicked off with a parade down Waynewood Boulevard July 5. As a tribute to America’s continued tradition of participating in the World Olympic Games, parade participants adorned themselves and their homemade floats with an Olympic Sport theme ranging from football to hockey. Others opted for the traditional stars and stripes.

Participants in the parade included the Fairfax County Police Department and the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, followed by Cub Scout Pack 1504 and Brownie Troop 1849.

The “orphans” from Aldersgate Community Church Theatre’s summer musical production “Annie” sang “Hardknock Life” to parade-watchers as they passed by.

This year’s event logo commemorating America’s continued participation in the World Olympic Games was a collaboration of designs by Hellen Moffitt, 9, and Alexis Englemen, grade 12. Submitted entries for a logo design contest was sponsored by the Waynewood Elementary School and the parade committee.

This year’s winners of the Waynewood Civic Association’s annual scholarships included Ryan Cones and Emily Verdin. These scholarships are awarded annually to Waynewood graduating seniors based on outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the community.

Following the parade, the celebration continued with rides, games and a classic cookout on the grounds of the Waynewood Recreation Association.
