Fairfax resident Lauren B. Lewis, a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School, received a $2,500 scholarship from Discover Card as part of its Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship program. To qualify, students must maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA, demonstrate accomplishments in three areas including special talents, leadership and community service, while successfully overcoming a roadblock or challenge. The winners in each state go on to compete for nine national scholarships each worth $25,000.

Chantilly High teacher Fred Pechin is retiring after 30 years in the school system. Former students and friends of the government and history teacher are invited to attend a going-away reception on Friday, June 4 from 2-3:30 p.m. in his trailer, T13.

The Centreville High School Choral Department is presenting its spring concert, “Broadway Pops”, on Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be performed in the Skip Maiden Theatre at Centreville High School, and ticket prices will be $3 for students and $5 for adults. The concert will include performances by the Women’s Ensemble, Concert Choir, Front N’Centre Show Choir, Madrigal Ensemble and Symphonic Choir. It will also feature many of the seniors, who will be performing selected solos. The choirs will perform music from the pop and Broadway musical genres, including such musicals as “Les Miserables” and “Movin’ Out”. This is the culminating performance event of the year for the choral department.

Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax will celebrate its Baccalaureate Mass on Friday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Timothy Church in Chantilly with assistant principal and chaplain Father Terry Specht presiding.

Paul VI will hold its graduation ceremony for the 280 students in the Class of 2004 on Sunday, June 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the George Mason University Patriot Center.

CBS News Washington correspondent and three-time Emmy winner Wyatt Andrews, whose daughter Averil is president of Paul VI's senior class, will be the commencement speaker.

Student speakers will be the Co-Valedictorians of the Class of 2004, Michael Chauvin of Reston and Rachel Massey of Oak Hill. Chauvin will attend Boston College and Massey has accepted a Distinguished Scholar Award at Tulane University.

The Chantilly Pyramid Minority Student Achievement Committee will hold its annual awards ceremonies, this coming weekend. Middle and high school students will be honored Saturday, June 5, from 5-7 p.m., at Chantilly High. Students in elementary school will be feted Sunday, June 6, from 4-6 p.m., at Colin Powell Elementary.

Pleasant Valley Preschool is currently enrolling for the 2004-05 year. The school has been located in the Greenbriar Community Center for 20 years. Megan MacLauchlan Purdum, daughter of Candace Purdum of Centreville and Jim Purdum of Haymarket, graduated on May 29 with a Juris Doctor degree from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, in Washington, D.C. Megan attended London Towne Elementary, Rocky Run Middle School and graduated from Centreville High School. She is a 1996 graduate of James Madison University with a B.S. in Sociology.

Westfield High School will hold a farewell reception for outgoing principal Dale Rumberger on Wednesday, June 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the school's library. Virginia Campaign 101, a project of the 21st Century Democrats, is an all-inclusive weekend to teach 100 high school students from across Virginia the skills necessary to participate in or even run a successful political campaign, including campaign organizing, methods of increasing voter turnout, fund-raising techniques, and media relations. LEC, a Paris-based non-profit cultural exchange program, is seeking Northern Virginia host families for French students during the month of August. The program, Loisirs Culturels A l'Etranger, promotes international exchange by bringing people of different cultures together. The American host family does not need to speak French to host a student. The only thing requested of the family is to provide room and board, friendship and understanding. The students bring their own spending money and are covered by their own insurance program. The French students are between the ages of 13 and 19 and all have studied English in school. The Chantilly High School All-Night Grad Party committee announced the start of the Graduation-Reserved-Seat Raffle. Raffle tickets are $5 each. Winners, along with their family and friends, will enjoy a stress-free Graduation Day ceremony on June 15 at George Mason University. The first-place winner will receive 16 reserved seats, front row, stage left. The second-place will receive 16 seats, second row, stage left, with the third-place winner receiving 16 reserved seats, third row, stage left. Tickets will be sold at CHS school events during the winter and spring. Tickets may also be purchased from any ANGP chairperson. The drawing will be held during the senior meeting in May.
