Falls Church's 'Three Musketeers'

Cappies Review

<bt>"The Three Musketeers" is a famous story of three members of the King's guard, set in 17 century France. The cast and crew of Falls Church High School performed this play with class, relating the adventures of the heroic trio and their friend, the young D'Artangnan, as they battle to overcome the corrupted forces of the cardinal.

It was clear who the show-stealer was the moment he sauntered on stage. Clayton Tune as King Louis XIII portrayed his character with hilarity and distinguished flair as he pranced about, attired in flounces and high-heeled shoes.

Other prominent actors included Manuel Argueta and Ricky Dilworth as the fashion-savvy Porthos and the gallant Aramis, respectively; Vanessa Hatcher as the maid Constance; and Erin Burns as the deceptively beautiful Milady de Winter.

The lighting of the show was very dim and frequently threw the actors' faces into shadow instead of illuminating them. However, the costumes were stunning. Headed by Ruth Petersen and Holly Doak, the outfitters supplied the cast with an array of intricately gorgeous gowns and sturdy uniforms, all correct for the period. Props, led by Ricky Dilworth, included an impressive assortment of swords, sabers and guns. The set was simple, but fairly effective for setting scenes in appropriate environments.

THERE WERE scuffles and brawls aplenty to keep the audience entertained. The actors displayed amazing skill at fencing, punching, and banging heads into walls and tables. Most players brandished their weapons superbly, excelling remarkably in the difficult undertaking of sword fighting.

The company of "The Three Musketeers" had a few difficulties here and there but rose to meet every challenge delightfully.
