Ride of the Patriots. One of the staging areas for "Rolling Thunder," the annual ride to honor military and public safety personnel, will assemble in Fairfax City. The ride started in 1987 for Vietnam War prisoners of war and military personnel missing in action. The parade begins at 7:45 a.m., on eastbound Lee Highway from Capt. Pell's Crab House and ends at Patriot Harley-Davidson, 9739 Lee Highway. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:20 a.m., at Patriot Harley-Davidson. At 9:05, riders will depart under police escort for the Pentagon. Parking is available at Fairfax High School. From 7:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m., eastbound Lee Highway is closed from Eaton Place to Fairfax Circle to accommodate the estimated 4,000 motorcycles lining up for the ride. Westbound Lee Highway from Eaton Place to Fairfax Circle will be a two-way street. For more information, call 703-352-5400.

Civil War Battle Commemoration. The Fairfax County Park Authority and the Ancient Order of Hibernians are conducting a ceremony to commemorate the Sept. 1, 1862, Battle of Ox Hill, in which Union Maj. Gens. Issac Stevens and Phillip Kearny were killed. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., at the intersection of Monument Drive and West Ox Road in Fairfax. The 17th Virginia Volunteer Infantry CSA color guard and the Father William Corby Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians color guard will present the colors at the stone monument erected to commemorate the battle. A guest speaker will discuss the battle. A wreath laying is planned, and the ceremony will include period musical renditions and songs. Refreshments will also be served.
